Chapter 7 - The Boardroom War

The strike against the Brookline safehouse was Gregor’s final, desperate gamble, and it had failed catastrophically. Within an hour of the attack, Luca’s loyal enforcers had neutralized the remaining intruders, securing the perimeter and moving Elena and the wounded Marco to a secondary, subterranean bunker beneath a commercial property downtown.

Luca didn't wash the soot or the blood from his face before he marched into the corporate headquarters of Volkov Logistics the next morning. The building was a sleek, modern skyscraper in the financial district, the legitimate front for an illegitimate empire.

The surviving members of the council were all gathered in the executive boardroom, their faces pale and anxious as they watched the news reports of a "gangland shootout" in the wealthy suburbs of Brookline. When the heavy double doors swung open and Luca walked in, flanked by four heavily armed security operators, several council members stood up in panic.

"Luca," one of the older men, an uncle named Dimitri, said with a trembling voice. "Your father... Nikolai passed away in the hospital an hour ago. The family needs leadership. This war with Gregor is destroying our stock prices. The feds are already circling the harbor terminals."

Luca walked to the head of the table, stopping right behind the grand leather chair that had belonged to his father for thirty years. He placed both hands on the backrest, looking around the room with an expression that made even the most hardened killers look down at their hands.

"Gregor Volkov is no longer a member of this family," Luca announced, his voice carrying an icy finality. "As of thirty minutes ago, his personal accounts have been liquidated, his shell companies have been dismantled, and his primary enforcement crew has been turned over to the State Police by an anonymous source. If any man in this room has an objection to my leadership, or if any man still thinks the auditor should be handled—speak now."

Dimitri swallowed hard. "And the files, Luca? The ones the auditor compiled? If the federal government has that data, we’re all going to prison regardless of who sits in that chair."

Luca waved his hand, and Marco—his arm bound in a tight medical sling—stepped forward, setting a single, silver encrypted hard drive onto the center of the conference table.

"The drive contains the full record of Gregor’s embezzlement and the financial data of the construction holding company," Luca explained. "It has already been delivered to the United States Attorney’s office with a signed cover letter from an independent whistleblower. But the secondary layer—the layer that contains your names, your personal routing numbers, and the family’s core infrastructure—has been permanently erased from the server. The auditor has signed a non-disclosure agreement with my private legal firm. She is no longer a threat to this table, because she is no longer an auditor."

"What is she then?" Dimitri asked, his eyes narrowing.

Luca looked out the massive window, looking toward the distant blue line of the Atlantic ocean where his family’s ships had moved wealth for generations. "She is the future Mrs. Volkov. And from this day forward, this family operates under her financial standards. No more offshore laundering through illicit subcontractors. No more blood money on the docks. We are going completely legitimate, gentlemen. And if you don't like the new balance sheet, you are welcome to retire... or face the consequences."
