Chapter 5 - The Council's Ultimatum

The meeting with the Volkov family council was held at the traditional estate in Beacon Hill—a grand, historic mansion filled with oil paintings of long-dead ancestors and the oppressive smell of old mahogany and cigar smoke. At the center of the long table sat Nikolai Volkov, the patriarch of the family, a man whose silver hair and elegant demeanor belied the fact that he had ordered the deaths of dozens of men to maintain his crown.
Luca walked into the room alone, his posture entirely unbothered by the row of armed enforcers standing along the walls. He took his seat at the opposite end of the table from his father. Gregor Volkov sat to Nikolai's right, his face fixed in a smug, superior expression, confident that the patriarch would discipline his rebellious son.
"Luca," Nikolai began, his voice low and vibrating with a father’s disappointed authority. "Gregor tells me you interfered with an official interrogation. You took the auditor from our facility without authorization. This woman possesses financial intelligence that threatens every member of this table. Why is she still alive?"
"She is alive because I willed it, Father," Luca said, leaning back in his chair and locking eyes with the old man. "And she will remain alive because she is under my personal protection."
Gregor slammed his fist onto the table. "This is absurd! He’s compromising the entire family for a woman! She’s an auditor from Deloitte, Nikolai! She already has a meeting scheduled with the FBI’s financial crimes division! If she talks, we lose the shipping terminals, the construction holdings—everything!"
Luca clicked a small remote in his hand, and the massive flat-screen monitor on the wall behind his father lit up with a complex digital spreadsheet. The lines of code and financial percentages were highlighted in sharp red and blue.
"You’re an idiot, Gregor," Luca said coldly. "You thought she just had the records of the construction company. What you didn't realize—because you don't know how to read a balance sheet—is that Elena Marsh managed to trace the secondary layer of our financial network. She found the dummy corporations you used to embezzle twelve million dollars from the family’s main accounts over the last three years."
The room went completely silent. Gregor’s face drained of all color, his eyes widening in absolute terror as the other council members turned to look at him, their expressions hardening into murderous glares.
"Nikolai, he’s lying!" Gregor stammered, his voice rising in panic. "He’s fabricating data to save his girl!"
"The drive is in my possession, Father," Luca continued, ignoring Gregor’s frantic protests. "The encryption has been bypassed by my team. If anything happens to Elena Marsh—if she so much as breaks a fingernail—this entire ledger, along with the proof of Gregor’s embezzlement and the exact location of our family’s offshore routing numbers, will be automatically delivered to the United States Attorney’s office. I don't need the FBI to destroy us, Father. I can do it myself with a single keystroke."

Nikolai Volkov leaned forward, his ancient eyes staring at his son with a mixture of pride and dangerous calculation. "You are threatening your own blood, Luca. For a civilian."
"I am protecting the only thing in this world that makes me human," Luca corrected, standing up and buttoning his jacket. "You have forty-eight hours to clear Gregor out of his territory and hand his logistics contracts to Marco. If I see his men near Brookline, the files are sent. Do we understand each other?"
