Chapter 2 - The Letter in the Shadows

The private study of Roman DeLuca was lined with leather-bound books, dark mahogany paneling, and bulletproof glass overlooking the snow-dusted gardens of the Westchester estate. A fire crackled in the hearth, casting long, dancing shadows across the massive desk.
Noah sat on the plush leather sofa, wrapped in a fleece blanket, slowly sipping a cup of warm milk that Claire had prepared for him in the main kitchen. His eyes were heavy with exhaustion, but he refused to let go of Claire’s coat sleeve.
Roman sat behind his desk. The sealed envelope lay unopened on the polished wood in front of him.
"Drink your milk, Noah," Roman said softly, his voice carrying a rare, tender warmth reserved only for his son. "Then Frank is going to take you upstairs to your room. You're safe now. I promise you."
Noah looked up at Claire. "Are you going to stay?"
Claire glanced at Roman, who gave her a single, firm nod.
"I'll stay right here until you're asleep, Noah," Claire promised, kneeling beside the sofa to tuck the blanket around his shoulders. "I'm not going anywhere tonight."
Minutes later, Frank gently escorted the sleepy boy out of the study, locking the heavy mahogany door behind them. The room fell into a heavy, suffocating silence.
Roman looked at Claire. He took in her appearance—the plain black trousers, the practical boots, the absolute lack of pretense or fear. She was a woman who dealt with broken hearts and shattered families every day of her life. She did not bow to his status, nor did she cringe at his reputation.
"Why didn't you give me this letter three years ago?" Roman asked, his hand resting over the sealed paper. "If Isabella came to you... if she was afraid..."
"Because she was terrified that whoever was watching her would find out she had spoken to an outsider," Claire replied, taking a seat across from him. "Isabella knew about your world, Roman. She knew how deep the web went. She told me that if she gave the letter to you directly, you would react with immediate violence, and that would put Noah directly in the crosshairs."
Roman’s jaw tightened. "And she trusted a grief counselor she barely knew?"
"She trusted someone who wasn't tied to your family's money or your family's enemies," Claire corrected sharply. "I run a non-profit center for traumatized children. I don't care about trucking contracts or political favors, Mr. DeLuca. I care about protecting children from the collateral damage of adult greed."
Roman stared at her for a long moment, a faint, dark glint of respect flashing in his eyes. Then, using an ivory letter opener, he sliced open the top of the cream envelope.
Inside were three pages written in Isabella’s flowing cursive, along with a small, encrypted USB flash drive.
Roman unfolded the pages. As his eyes scanned the first lines, the blood drained from his face.
My darling Roman, the letter began.
If you are reading this, it means I am no longer with you, and our sweet Noah has found his way to Claire Dawson. Do not hunt Claire; she is the guardian I chose for our son’s heart if the worst should happen.
Roman, my death will not be an accident. The threats have already begun. Someone within the inner circle of the Five Families wants to dismantle the peace you built. They know that to break you, they must break our family from the inside.
Watch Camille Rossi. Her father’s debts to the Chicago syndicate were erased two months ago, and she did not come back into your life by chance. She is working with someone close to you—someone who has access to our home, our security codes, and our financial accounts.
They are planning to isolate Noah. They want him broken so you will be distracted, emotional, and vulnerable to a takeover. Protect our boy, Roman. And do not trust anyone who tells you to forget me.
Forever yours,Isabella.
The paper crumpled slightly under the sudden, violent grip of Roman’s hand.
The fire in the hearth snapped, but the silence in the study was deafening. Roman slowly raised his head. His slate-grey eyes were no longer just angry; they were burning with a terrifying, apocalyptic rage.
"Isabella’s car didn't lose its brakes on the icy turn three years ago," Roman whispered, his voice vibrating with lethal realization. "It was sabotaged."
"Isabella suspected it," Claire said quietly. "She told me she had noticed subtle changes in her vehicle's telemetry, but every time she brought it up to your former head of security, he dismissed it as a mechanical glitch."
"Marcus," Roman breathed, naming his former security chief who had retired six months after Isabella’s death. "Marcus was recommended to me by Camille’s father."

Before Roman could say another word, the heavy brass door handle of the study jiggled. Frank’s voice came through the intercom system on the desk, tense and urgent.
"Boss. We have a situation at the gate. Camille Rossi just tried to breach the perimeter in her sports car. We stopped her, but she isn't alone. She has two armed men with her... wearing credentials from the Federal Bureau of Investigation."
