Chapter 8 - The Dawson Center

Six months later.
The early summer sun washed over the red-brick facade of the newly renovated Dawson Center for Childhood Grief in downtown Manhattan.
Where a cramped, underfunded non-profit clinic had once stood, there was now a state-of-the-art facility featuring bright art therapy rooms, a rooftop sensory garden, and a staff of twenty top pediatric psychologists.
A large bronze plaque near the main entrance read: THE ISABELLA DELUCA FOUNDATION FOR CHILDHOOD HEALING.
Inside the sunlit courtyard, children were playing on the lawn, their laughter echoing off the brick walls.
Claire stood on the garden terrace, wearing a simple floral dress, holding a clipboard as she reviewed the afternoon intake schedule. She looked healthy, radiant, and deeply at peace.
"Miss Dawson!" a cheerful voice called out.
Noah came running across the grass, wearing a blue summer polo shirt and sneakers. His cheeks were rosy, his eyes bright and full of life. He held up a massive Lego spaceship he had built in the center's art room.
"Look what I made!" Noah proudly displayed the creation. "Dad helped me with the wings this morning before his meeting!"
Claire smiled warmly, kneeling down to inspect the spaceship. "It's incredible, Noah. You're getting better at engineering than your father."
"That's because he has a better teacher," a deep, smooth baritone voice spoke from behind her.
Claire stood up and turned around.
Roman DeLuca stepped onto the terrace. He wore a crisp navy suit without a tie, his top button undone, looking relaxed, powerful, and undeniably handsome. Over the past six months, Roman had systematically restructured his business operations, stepping back from the rougher edges of his family's legacy and transitioning his holdings into legal real estate, shipping logistics, and philanthropic foundations.
Noah beamed up at his father. "Dad! Can we go to the park now?"
"Give us five minutes, son," Roman said, handing Noah a small juice box. "Go show Miss Sarah your spaceship."
"Okay!" Noah took the juice box and scampered off toward the therapy rooms.
Roman walked over to Claire, stopping just inches from her. He reached out and gently slipped his hand into hers, pulling her slightly closer.
"How was your board meeting?" Claire asked, smiling up at him.
"Boring," Roman said with a faint, dark smile playing on his lips. "City council members talk too much and say too little. I prefer working with people who get things done."
He looked around the bustling, beautiful courtyard. "The center looks extraordinary, Claire. You've created something amazing here."
"We created it," Claire corrected gently, resting her free hand against his chest. "Your foundation made all of this possible, Roman."
"Isabella made it possible," Roman murmured, his eyes softening as he looked into hers. "She knew that you were the only person who could save us. And she was right."
He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, navy velvet box.
Claire’s breath caught in her throat. Her heart began to race.
Roman took a step back, holding the box between them. He didn't drop to his knees like a romantic boy; he stood before her as a man who had faced death, war, and heartbreak, offering her his entire life without reservation.
"Six months ago, you walked into my house in a muddy coat and stood between my son and a room full of monsters," Roman said, his deep voice trembling with raw, profound emotion. "You taught my boy how to smile again. And you taught me that I still have a heart worth giving."
He popped the velvet box open. Inside sat a breathtaking solitaire diamond ring, set in a band of paved platinum.
"Claire Dawson," Roman said, his slate-grey eyes locking onto hers with absolute, eternal devotion. "Will you marry me, and make this family whole?"
Claire looked at the ring, then up at the man standing before her—the fierce protector, the loving father, the man who had torn down an empire to keep his son safe.
Tears of pure happiness welled in her eyes.

"Yes," Claire whispered, a brilliant smile breaking across her face. "Yes, Roman. Absolute yes."
From across the courtyard, Noah came running back onto the terrace, cheering loudly as Roman slipped the ring onto Claire’s finger and pulled her into a deep, sweeping kiss that filled the bright summer air with love, peace, and a future built to last forever.
