Chapter 7 - The Winter Storm Clears

The tactical team swept through the estate with silent, lethal efficiency, arresting four secondary security guards who had been on Frank’s payroll.
Outside, the snowstorm was finally beginning to clear, letting pale winter sunlight stream through the broken study windows.
In the main foyer, federal agents were loading Frank and his co-conspirators into black armored vans. The mole inside Roman’s inner circle had been torn out by the roots, and with the evidence secured on Isabella’s encrypted drive, federal warrants were currently being executed across Chicago, dismantling Dominic Vance’s entire syndicate in a single afternoon.
Claire sat on the velvet sofa in the grand drawing room, holding a fresh cup of tea. Noah was fast asleep beside her, his head resting comfortably in her lap, exhausted from the emotional hurricane of the past twelve hours.
Roman stepped into the room. He had changed into a clean dark suit, his dark hair combed back, his posture commanding and powerful. But as he looked at Claire and his sleeping son, the cold shell of the mob boss vanished completely.
He walked over and sat on the coffee table directly in front of her.
"The federal prosecutor just called," Roman said softly. "The evidence Isabella left behind is ironclad. Vance, Camille, and Frank will spend the rest of their lives in a federal supermax facility."
Claire let out a long, shuddering breath. "It's over."
"It's over," Roman agreed. He reached out and gently brushed a stray lock of dark hair from Noah’s forehead. "He’s safe now. My son is finally safe."
He looked up, his slate-grey eyes locking onto Claire’s. The intensity in his gaze made her breath hitch in her throat.
"And you," Roman said, his voice dropping to a low, rough murmur. "You stood in front of a gun for my son today. You walked into a house full of armed men, faced down federal agents, and brought my wife’s memory back to life."
"I did what any person who cares about a child would do, Roman," Claire said quietly, feeling her cheeks warm under his gaze.
Roman reached out and covered her hand with his massive, warm palm. The contrast between her soft, delicate skin and his calloused hand was striking, yet the connection felt entirely natural.
"I spent three years convinced that my life was meant to be lived in the dark," Roman whispered, his thumb lightly stroking the back of her wrist. "I thought that protecting Noah meant building higher walls and keeping everyone at a distance. But last night... when you knelt on that cold marble floor and held him... I saw light in this house for the first time since Isabella died."
Claire looked down at their joined hands, her heart hammering a fast, fluttering rhythm against her ribs. "Roman... I'm a child counselor. I live in a modest apartment in Manhattan. I don't belong in your world."
May you like
Roman leaned closer, his face inches from hers, his dark scent of cedarwood, expensive tobacco, and rain surrounding her completely.
"Then let me build a new world, Claire," Roman said, his voice filled with a fierce, unshakeable promise. "A world where my past can't touch my family. A world where you don't have to walk away."
