Chapter 2 - The Locked Music Room

A week after her encounter with Viktor, Sophia discovered that the mansion was divided into two distinct worlds: the lived-in western sector, where the staff bustled silently, and the abandoned East Wing, where dust settled like fallen snow over draped furniture. It was in the East Wing that Elena Vance had spent her final days before her mysterious death six months prior. Official staff chatter claimed she died of a sudden, aggressive illness, but the terrified whispers in the servants' quarters hinted at something far more sinister—poison, betrayal, and an internal power struggle within the Vance syndicate.

It was a rainy Tuesday afternoon when Emma wandered off.

Sophia had been deep in the laundry room, scrubbing stubborn stains out of fine linen, assuming Emma was playing safely in the adjacent pantry with her stuffed bear. When she walked out to check on her, the pantry was empty. Panic, sharp and metallic, surged in Sophia’s throat.

"Emma?" Sophia called out, keeping her voice low so as not to draw the ire of Margaret, the strict housekeeper.

No answer.

Sophia hurried through the corridors, her pulse thumping in her ears. She checked the grand parlor, the kitchen, and the library. Nothing. Her search led her toward the prohibited East Wing. The air grew colder here, smelling faintly of stale lavender and old paper.

"Emma!" Sophia whispered urgently.

She heard a soft, metallic clink coming from the end of the dusty hallway. Sophia hurried toward the sound and found the double doors of the East Wing’s grand music room slightly ajar. A heavy brass padlocked chain hung loose from the handles—someone had forgotten to snap it shut.

Sophia pushed the door open gently and gasped.

Inside, beneath a magnificent crystal chandelier draped in cobwebs, sat a glossy grand piano. Sitting on the piano bench was Isabella, her face illuminated by the gloomy grey light filtering through tall, arched windows. Beside her, standing on tiptoes, was Emma, her tiny hands reaching up to press a single key.

Plink.

A high, solitary note resonated through the cavernous room.

"Look, Isa! Music!" Emma giggled.

"Shh," Isabella whispered, though her voice lacked any anger. She reached out and touched a sleek, rosewood box resting on the edge of the piano. "This was my mother's room. Father locked it the day she... the day she went to sleep. Nobody is allowed in here."

Sophia stepped quickly into the room, her heart in her mouth. "Young Miss... Emma... we must leave immediately. If your father or the guards find us here—"

"He won't come here," Isabella interrupted, her voice devoid of childhood warmth, sounding chillingly hollow. "He hates this room. He hates me because I look like her."

"That isn't true, sweetie," Sophia said gently, approaching the girls slowly. "Your father cares for you deeply. He's just... hurting."

"He's hiding things," Isabella said bitterly. She picked up the small rosewood box. It was locked with an intricate brass keyhole. "My mother told me that if anything ever happened to her, I had to find the key inside the blue vase. But the blue vase was smashed the night she died."

Emma, oblivious to the gravity of the conversation, leaned over the piano and pointed a small, sticky finger toward the open underside of the grand piano keyboard. "Key!" she declared proudly.

Sophia and Isabella both froze.

"What did you say, Emma?" Sophia asked, stepping closer.

Emma pointed again underneath the mahogany lip of the piano, where a small velvet pouch was taped securely to the wood, hidden completely from plain sight. It hung right above where a small child playing on the floor might look up and see it.

Isabella gasped, her small hands flying to her mouth. Sophia reached under the piano and felt the soft velvet. She pulled it gently, peeling the heavy tape away. Inside the pouch lay a tiny, silver key attached to a delicate locket.

"Is that...?" Isabella whispered, her eyes wide with sudden, intense hope.

Before Sophia could answer, the heavy double doors of the music room slammed open against the walls with a sound like a gunshot.

"What is the meaning of this?!" a thunderous voice boomed across the room.

Sophia whirled around to see Viktor standing in the doorway, his face pale with fury, flanked by his head of security, a ruthless-looking man named Marcus whose hand was already resting ominously beneath his suit jacket.
