Chapter 3 - Shadows Over the Estate

The tension in the music room was suffocate. Viktor stepped forward, his eyes locked onto the silver key trembling in Sophia’s hand. For a terrifying second, Sophia believed she and her daughter would be cast out onto the street—or worse, eliminated to preserve whatever secret that key unlocked.
"Who opened this door?" Viktor demanded, his dark voice vibrating with suppressed rage.
"It was me, Father," Isabella spoke up, stepping bravely in front of Emma and Sophia. Her small voice trembled, but she stood tall. "The lock was loose. I brought them in here."
Viktor looked at his daughter, the anger in his eyes faltering slightly, replaced by a profound, agonizing sorrow. "Isabella... you know you are not allowed in this room. This place... it belongs to the past."
"It belongs to Mama!" Isabella cried out, tears finally breaking through her stoic defense. "You locked her away! You act like she never existed! You hate her, and you hate me!"
"That is enough!" Viktor barked, though the words seemed to cause him physical pain. He turned his piercing eyes toward Sophia. "Hand me what you are holding."
Sophia’s hands trembled uncontrollably. She looked down at Emma, who was clutching her skirt, terrified by the sudden noise. Sophia knew that if she handed the key directly to Viktor, Isabella’s last connection to her mother might be destroyed forever. But disobeying a mafia don meant instant ruin.
"Sir," Sophia said, her voice shaking but resolute. "Your daughter is drowning in grief. She doesn't need rules right now; she needs her father. Please... don't take this from her."
Marcus, the head of security, stepped forward aggressively. "Watch your tongue, woman. You are a maid here, nothing more."
"Stand down, Marcus," Viktor commanded coldly, never taking his eyes off Sophia. A long, agonizing silence filled the room. Finally, Viktor walked over to the piano. He looked down at the rosewood box, then at his daughter's tear-streaked face.
"Open it," Viktor said quietly.
Isabella looked up, startled. "What?"
"Open the box, Isabella," Viktor repeated, his voice surprisingly gentle. "If Elena hid something in there for you... you have the right to see it."
With trembling hands, Sophia handed the silver key to Isabella. The young girl inserted the key into the brass lock of the rosewood box. It turned with a soft click.
Inside lay a small, black velvet notebook and a heavily encrypted flash drive. Isabella picked up the notebook and opened it. On the first page, written in elegant, flowing cursive, were the words: For my precious Isabella. If you are reading this, I am gone, and the snakes in our house have moved.
Viktor’s face drained of all color. He snatched the notebook, his eyes scanning the pages frantically. As he read, his expression morphed from grief to absolute, terrifying fury.
"Marcus," Viktor whispered, his voice dangerously low.
May you like
"Yes, Don Vance?"
"Secure the perimeter. Nobody enters or leaves the estate. Call the inner council." Viktor slammed the notebook shut, his jaw clenched so tightly the muscles quivered. "My wife was not sick. She was poisoned."
