Chapter 8 - The Shadow's Last Stand

Six months passed. The Vance syndicate was restructured, its traitorous elements eradicated, and Viktor began systematically dismantling the illegal smuggling operations that his late wife had hated so deeply, transitioning his vast wealth into legitimate global enterprises.

The dark, cold mansion was changing. Light flooded through the windows of the East Wing, which had been reopened and fully restored. The eerie silence that once defined the estate was replaced by the laughter of two young girls playing in the gardens.

However, the lingering remnants of the Northern Syndicate were not willing to let Viktor walk away into a peaceful life.

On a crisp autumn afternoon, while Viktor was away in the city finalizing the sale of his last illegal shipping dock, a convoy of unmarked black SUVs crashed through the outer gates of the estate. A desperate, heavy-armed strike team—the last remnants of Marcus’s old faction—launched a frantic attack on the mansion, seeking to take Isabella hostage to force Viktor's surrender.

Gunfire echoed across the manicured lawns. The mansion’s advanced defense systems activated instantly, steel shutters sealing the lower floors, but two armed mercenaries managed to breach the second-floor balcony through an upper window.

Sophia was in the playroom with Isabella and Emma when the glass shattered.

"Inside the safe room! NOW!" Sophia screamed, grabbing both children.

She rushed them toward the master bedroom, where Viktor had installed a reinforced steel panic room behind a walk-in closet. But as they reached the bedroom door, a masked gunman stepped into the hallway, raising his weapon.

"Got you," the mercenary growled.

Sophia didn't hesitate. She threw herself in front of Isabella and Emma, shielding them with her own body as the man pulled the trigger.

BANG!

Sophia gasped, braced for the lethal impact—but the shot hadn't come from the mercenary.

The gunman collapsed to the floor. Standing behind him was Viktor, who had rushed back to the estate via helicopter the moment the perimeter breach alarm sounded on his phone. His suit was disheveled, his eyes burning with a terrifying, protective fury.

He dropped his weapon and rushed to Sophia, taking her by the shoulders, his hands shaking as he checked her for injuries. "Sophia! Are you hit?!"

"I'm... I'm okay," Sophia breathed out, trembling wildly. "The girls... they're safe."

May you like

Viktor looked at Sophia, his cold grey eyes brimming with an intense, raw emotion he had locked away for years. He pulled her into a tight, desperate embrace, pressing his face into her hair.

"Thank God," Viktor whispered, his voice cracking. "Thank God..."
