Chapter 1 - The Chemical Thread

The silver-haired doctor, Dr. Vance, scoffed beneath his breath, stepping backward as if Hannah’s hand touching the pink fleece might contaminate the sterile air of the nursery. "Mr. Bolaro," Vance insisted, his voice smooth as polished marble, "there is no need to indulge the laundry staff. Skin sensitivity in children Sophia’s age is remarkably common. A mild contact dermatitis—"

"Quiet," Nico Bolaro commanded. He did not raise his voice, but the word hit the room like a heavy iron weight. His dark eyes, usually cold enough to freeze blood, were fixed entirely on Hannah. "Show me."

Hannah felt the weight of every gaze in the room. Evelyn Vale, the head housekeeper, stood with her arms crossed, her thin lips pressed into a bloodless line of sheer contempt. The two armed guards by the doorway shifted their weight, their hands hovering near their holsters. One wrong move, one hesitation, and Hannah knew she would be tossed into the street—or worse, dragged down into whatever dark basements this family kept for those who failed them.

She knelt beside Sophia, gently brushing back the little girl’s damp hair. "May I look at your blanket, sweetie?" Hannah whispered softly, ensuring her tone stayed calm to keep the trembling child grounded.

Sophia nodded, her eyes wide and tear-filled, letting go of the fabric.

Hannah pulled the pink fleece onto her lap. The fabric felt soft, warm, and deceptively innocent. To anyone else, it was just an ordinary child’s blanket—worn at the edges, smelling vaguely of lavender and cotton. But Hannah had spent three weeks washing, drying, and folding this exact blanket three times a week. She knew every fiber of it. She knew where the embroidery had loosened on the third star from the left. She knew the exact weight of the fleece when dry versus when damp.

She spread the blanket flat across the foot of the bed. "Look here," Hannah said, pointing to the bottom seam.

Evelyn snorted. "It’s a hem, girl. Did you bring us in here to teach us basic sewing?"

"It’s not just a hem," Hannah replied, her voice steadying as her hands moved with practiced accuracy. "The Bolaro estate uses a triple-threaded lockstitch with organic white cotton thread for all of Sophia’s bedding—Evelyn, you bought it yourself from the Italian manufacturer six months ago. But look at the left corner."

Nico leaned closer, shadowing Hannah. He smelled faintly of expensive cedarwood, whiskey, and cold night air.

Hannah lifted the corner of the blanket. Beneath the visible, worn seam lay a secondary line of stitching. It was tight, dark grey, and made of synthetic nylon thread. The craftsmanship was clean, but it didn't match the rest of the blanket's age. It was brand new.

"Someone opened this hem within the last twenty-four hours," Hannah explained, her voice echoing in the dead silence of the nursery. "And they closed it back up using a double-needle machine. The laundry wing doesn't even own a double-needle machine."

Nico’s eyes hardened into black ice. He stepped forward and ripped the blanket from Hannah’s hands, grabbing a small silver penknife from his pocket. With a swift, practiced slice, he severed the synthetic gray threads along the seam.

A small square of translucent material fluttered out, landing softly on the dark hardwood floor.

It was a thin, flexible patch, no larger than a playing card, encased in perforated clear plastic. A sharp, faint chemical odor—resembling dry alcohol mixed with bitter almonds—drifted into the air the moment the seal was broken.

"What is that?" Nico demanded, turning his terrifying gaze onto Dr. Vance.

Dr. Vance swallowed hard, his composure cracking for the very first time. "I... I have no idea. A manufacturing defect?"

"A patch designed to release a contact toxin when warmed by human body heat," Hannah said softly, pointing to the tiny micro-perforations on the plastic. "When Sophia pulled the blanket tight around her shoulders, her body heat warmed the chemical inside, seeping it straight through the fleece onto her skin."

Nico dropped to his knees, taking Sophia into his arms, kissing her hair while staring at the tiny plastic patch on the floor as if it were a venomous snake. "Call the hazmat team," he ordered the guard at the door, his voice lethal. "Lock down the estate. Nobody leaves. Not the staff, not the guards, and especially not the doctor."

Evelyn’s face paled to the color of ash. "Mr. Bolaro, surely you don't think—"

"I think someone put poison in my daughter’s bed," Nico growled, rising to his full height. He looked down at Hannah, his eyes shifting from cold fury to something complex and unreadable. "And the only person in this house with enough sense to notice was the maid everyone tried to blame."
