Chapter 5 - Unraveling the Web

By dawn, the attack had been thoroughly crushed.

Julian’s mercenaries were either captured or had fled into the surrounding woods. The mansion’s courtyard was filled with tactical vehicles, and the morning sun broke through the storm clouds, casting golden light across the damaged marble estate.

In Nico’s private study, a heavy oak table had been set up as a command center. Nico sat at the head, his white shirt stained with dirt and gunpowder, his knuckles bruised. Sitting across from him were two senior capos of the Bolaro syndicate—older men with weathered faces who governed the family’s legal and illegal operations across the region.

Hannah stood beside Sophia, who refused to let go of Hannah’s hand.

"Julian crossed a line," stated Uncle Carmine, the oldest capo, slamming his heavy hand on the table. "Targeting a brother’s business is one thing. Putting poison in a motherless six-year-old child’s bed? That is against every code our family was built upon."

"We need absolute proof before we execute a family leader," said the second capo, Lorenzo. "Julian will claim Nico set him up to take full control of the shipping ports."

Nico motioned to the table. "Hannah, show them."

Hannah stepped forward, pulling a stack of documented laundry manifests and photo prints from a folder.

"Three days ago," Hannah began, her voice steady and clear, "a shipment of imported detergent barrels arrived from Julian’s port facility. I noticed the seals on the chemical drums were altered. At the time, I assumed it was poor quality control. But after examining the patch last night, I realized the patch’s chemical compound matches the raw industrial solvent stored in Julian’s warehouse in District 4."

She laid down two photographs side by side: one of the poison patch, and one of the shipping manifest bearing Julian’s personal signature authorizing the transfer of that specific compound to the mansion.

"Furthermore," Hannah added, "the synthetic thread used to sew the patch into Sophia’s blanket was a high-tensile 50-gauge nylon. It’s the exact same thread used to sew military-grade cargo canvas at Julian’s harbor docks. No domestic household uses that thread."

Carmine picked up the photographs, his eyes darkening as he reviewed the overwhelming evidence. He looked up at Hannah, clearly impressed. "You did all this research?"

"I keep detailed logs of every supply delivery to the domestic wing," Hannah replied simply. "It’s my job to know what comes into this house."

Nico looked at his capos. "Is this proof enough for the High Council?"

Carmine stood up, his expression grim. "It is enough. Julian has forfeited his right to the Bolaro name. By tonight, the syndicate will strip him of his territory."

"No," Nico said softly, his voice chillingly absolute. "Julian won't just lose his territory. He will pay for every tear my daughter cried last night."

Nico stood up and walked toward Hannah. He looked down at his daughter, who was clinging to Hannah’s skirt, looking peaceful for the first time in hours.

"Take Sophia up to the east wing," Nico said, his voice softening dramatically when he spoke to Hannah. "It’s secure now. Rest. I have business to finish in the city."

"Mr. Bolaro," Hannah said quietly, looking into his tired, dark eyes. "Please... stay safe. Sophia needs her father."

Nico stared at her, a rare, genuine smile touching the corner of his lips. "I will come back. I always come back to what matters."
