Chapter 9 - The Harbor Showdown

In the pitch-black security room, Marco cursed loudly, dropping his radio as the emergency shutoff triggered automated locks across the estate.

Before he could pull his tactical flashlight, the heavy brass vent cover above him collapsed outward, and Hannah dropped down from the ceiling like a ghost, landing heavily on his shoulders.

The impact sent both of them crashing to the floor. Marco roared in frustration, trying to throw her off, but Hannah grabbed the heavy steel fire extinguisher off the wall mount and slammed it directly into Marco’s chest.

Marco gasped for air, collapsing onto his back. Hannah didn't hesitate—she grabbed the heavy cuffs from Marco’s tactical belt and ratcheted them tightly around his wrists, securing him to the heavy iron leg of the control desk.

She grabbed his radio, switching to the master channel.

"Nico!" she yelled into the microphone, her voice raspy from smoke. "Nico, can you hear me? It’s a trap!"

Static buzzed, followed by the distant sound of heavy gunfire over the line. "Hannah?" Nico’s voice came through, panting and cold. "Where are you? What’s happening?"

"Marco betrayed you!" Hannah shouted, rushing out of the control room toward the front entrance. "He locked me in the east wing and set it on fire! Julian knows your position in District 4! You’re walking into an ambush!"

"I’m already at the harbor," Nico’s voice crackled. "They’ve surrounded the main warehouse. But my men are holding."

"Listen to me!" Hannah said, sprinting down the grand staircase into the courtyard where a valet SUV was idling with the keys in the ignition. "Clara left a letter! Julian’s authority over the capos is built on a fake document! The real family records are at St. Jude Trust! He has no legal standing with the syndicate!"

There was a brief silence over the radio, followed by Nico’s grim voice. "Get Sophia to safety, Hannah. I will handle Julian once and for all."

"No," Hannah said, jumping into the driver’s seat of the armored SUV and slamming the door shut. "I’m coming to you."

She slammed her foot on the accelerator, crashing the heavy SUV through the iron gates of the estate, speeding into the rainy night toward the harbor docks.

Fifteen minutes later, the heavy vehicle burst onto the rain-slicked piers of District 4. Flashlight beams cut through the thick fog, and bullet holes peppered the rusted shipping containers.

Julian Bolaro stood near the edge of the pier, surrounded by five armed guards, holding Nico at gunpoint against a shipping container. Nico was bleeding from a cut on his temple, his hands raised, but his eyes were filled with murderous defiance.

"It ends here, brother," Julian sneered, raising his pistol to Nico’s head. "The empire is mine."

Before Julian could pull the trigger, the heavy armored SUV burst through a row of wooden crates, its high-beam headlights blinding Julian’s men.

Hannah hit the horn, creating a deafening blast that echoed across the harbor.

The distraction was all Nico needed.

With lethal speed, Nico grabbed Julian’s wrist, twisting it inward until the bone snapped, disarming him instantly. In the same fluid motion, Nico pulled his hidden boot knife and took down two of the guards before they could orient themselves in the blinding light.

Nico’s loyal men, who had been pinned down in the warehouse, surged forward, swiftly disarming the remaining mercenaries.

Julian fell to his knees on the wet wood of the pier, clutching his broken wrist, sobbing in pain.

Nico stood over his brother, the rain washing the blood from his face. He picked up Julian’s fallen pistol, aiming it directly at Julian’s forehead.

"Nico! Please!" Julian begged, crawling backward toward the edge of the pier. "We’re blood! You can't kill your own brother!"

"You tried to poison my six-year-old daughter," Nico said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "You ceased being my brother the moment you touched her blanket."

Nico pulled the trigger.

The gunshot echoed once across the dark, silent water of the bay, and the shadow that had hung over the Bolaro family for years was finally lifted.
