Chapter 10 - A New Dawn on Waverly Drive

The morning sun broke through the dispersing clouds, painting the Lake Forest sky in brilliant shades of gold, rose, and amber.
The shattered windows of the grand foyer had already been boarded up by a rapid-response maintenance crew, and the estate looked once again like an untouchable fortress of wealth and power.
Inside the sunlit conservatory—the very place where it had all started twenty-four hours earlier—a small breakfast table had been set up among the blooming orchids and citrus trees.
Khloe sat across the table, wearing a comfortable knitted sweater, sipping a cup of hot coffee.
Across from her sat Arthur. He looked exhausted, the lines around his dark eyes deeper than before, but the suffocating, haunted darkness that had defined him for two years was entirely gone.
Between them sat Lily, happily spooning yogurt into her mouth while wearing a bright yellow dress Mrs. Gable had found for her.
"You don't have to leave, you know," Arthur said softly, breaking the gentle silence of the morning.
Khloe looked up, blinking in surprise. "Mr. Castellano... Arthur... I have an apartment in the city. I have a job. I can't just live in a mansion."
"Your apartment lease was up at the end of the month, and your medical debts were transferred to a collection agency yesterday," Arthur said matter-of-factly, taking a sip of his black coffee. "I paid them off. All of them."
Khloe’s jaw dropped. "You what?! I didn't ask you to pay my debts!"
"You didn't have to," Arthur replied, a faint, genuine smile touching the corners of his lips—the first real smile Khloe had ever seen on his face. "You brought my daughter back to the land of the living, Khloe. You gave me back the sound of her voice. Compared to that, fifty thousand dollars is nothing."
Before Khloe could argue, Lily climbed out of her chair, walked around the table, and crawled straight onto Khloe’s lap, wrapping her small arms securely around her neck.
"Mommy," Lily whispered happily, burying her face into Khloe’s shoulder. "Can we paint today?"
Khloe felt a warm, overwhelming wave of emotion flood her chest. She looked past Lily’s dark curls and met Arthur’s dark, steady gaze. The dangerous crime lord, the feared ruler of the Chicago ports, was looking at her with a profound, unspoken gratitude and a quiet, undeniable affection.
Khloe gently stroked Lily’s soft hair, smiling down at the little girl who had changed her world forever.

"We can paint whatever you want, bug," Khloe whispered.
Arthur reached across the table, resting his hand gently over Khloe’s, sealing a new, unbreakable bond beneath the warm glass roof of the Castellano estate. The storm was over, and for the first time in two years, the house on Waverly Drive was finally filled with life.
