Chapter 6 - The Shadows Outside

While Arthur and Khloe confronted the shocking truth inside the study, miles away in a dimly lit warehouse near the Chicago River, a different kind of conversation was taking place.

Viktor Morozov, the ruthless head of the Russian syndicate that had murdered Sophia Castellano, slammed his fist onto a metal table. A half-empty bottle of vodka rattled against the surface.

"What do you mean she’s still at the estate?" Viktor barked, glaring at a jittery-looking man wearing a cheap leather jacket.

"We monitored the delivery truck, Boss," the informant stammered, wiping sweat from his forehead. "The girl—Khloe Bennett—went inside through the service gates during the storm. She never came out. Castellano’s men locked down the whole perimeter because of a fallen tree, but our guys spotted her car still parked by the front courtyard."

Viktor’s cold, reptilian eyes narrowed into thin slits. A slow, cruel smile spread across his scarred face.

"So the delivery girl walked right into the lion’s den," Viktor chuckled darkly. "Arthur Castellano thinks he won the war. He thinks his little fortress is impenetrable. But if Khloe Bennett is trapped inside that mansion... she is the key we’ve been looking for."

"Boss?" the informant asked nervously. "What do you mean?"

"Elena Bennett was supposed to take the family vault keys with her when she disappeared twenty-one years ago," Viktor hissed, standing up and grabbing his heavy black trench coat. "If Khloe is her daughter, she might have the cipher. Castellano is blinded by his mute brat and his dead wife’s ghost. He won't see the blade coming until it's buried in his ribs."

Viktor picked up his cell phone and dialed a encrypted number.

"Assemble the strike team," Viktor ordered into the phone. "We pay a visit to Waverly Drive tonight."
