Chapter 7 - A Night of Revelations

Back in the guest suite, Khloe sat on the edge of the velvet bed, staring at her reflection in the gilded vanity mirror.
Her mind was spinning out of control. An aunt she never knew she had. A mafia empire. A billionaire crime lord who was now her distant relative by marriage. And a little girl who had looked at her grease-stained neon jacket and whispered Mommy.
The heavy oak door creaked open.
Khloe turned quickly. It wasn't Arthur this time.
It was Lily.
The little girl stood timidly in the doorway, wearing her grey nightgown, holding her stuffed rabbit under one arm. She looked smaller and more fragile than ever in the sprawling, luxurious hallway.
Khloe’s heart melted instantly. All the fear, the confusion, and the anger toward Arthur vanished in an instant. She stood up and walked slowly toward the child, dropping to her knees.
"Hey there, bug," Khloe whispered, echoing the nickname Arthur had used.
Lily didn't run this time. She walked forward slowly, her grey-blue eyes fixed on Khloe’s face. She reached out a small, trembling hand and gently touched Khloe’s cheek, tracing her jawline with a soft, wondering curiosity.
"You look like her," Lily whispered.
The words weren't a shout or a sob this time. They were clear, soft, and heartbreakingly sweet.
Khloe felt a hot tear spill over her own lashes. She covered Lily’s tiny hand with her own, pressing a gentle kiss to her knuckles. "I know, sweetie. I know I look like her. But I’m Khloe. I’m your cousin... or your aunt, I guess! But I promise I’m going to be right here."
"Don't go," Lily pleaded, her bottom lip trembling. "Papa is scary. But you... you smell like rain and vanilla."
Before Khloe could answer, heavy footsteps echoed down the hall.
Arthur appeared in the doorway. When he saw his daughter standing upright, talking—actually talking—to Khloe in a clear, unbroken voice, he froze as if he had been shot.
His dark eyes welled with tears that he had not allowed to fall even on the night his wife was murdered. He gripped the doorframe so hard his knuckles turned white, struggling to draw a breath through his tight throat.
"Lily..." Arthur whispered, his voice cracking entirely.
Lily turned her head, looking at her father. She didn't flinch. She didn't hide behind Khloe. She simply looked at him with solemn, forgiving eyes.

"Papa," Lily said softly. "Don't be mad at her."
Arthur closed his eyes, a single tear breaking free and sliding down his harsh cheek. He dropped to his knees right there in the hallway, burying his face in his hands as the years of suffocating grief finally began to break apart.
