Chapter 3 - The Shadow of the Morettis

The revelation hung over the study like a suffocating cloud. Hannah sat on the edge of the sofa, her hands shaking violently. Dominic paced the room like a caged predator, his dark eyes burning with lethal intent.

"Think, Hannah," Dominic ordered, stopping right in front of her. "Six years ago. Seven years ago. Did you ever go to a hospital? Did you ever undergo a procedure?"

"No! I've been healthy my whole life!" Hannah sobbed, pressing her hands against her face. "The only time I was ever in a hospital was when my dad was sick, and before that... when I was nineteen..."

She froze. Her eyes widened as a long-forgotten memory resurfaced from the fog of her youth.

Dominic caught the sudden change in her expression. He dropped to his knees in front of her, pulling her hands away from her face. "What happened when you were nineteen?"

"I... I needed money for my college tuition," Hannah stammered, her voice shaking. "I saw an advertisement in a local paper. A private medical research clinic in Queens was paying ten thousand dollars for egg donors. They told me it was for infertile couples who couldn't have children. I signed papers. They put me under anesthesia, did the retrieval, paid me the money, and I left. I never thought about it again."

Dominic's jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched violently near his ear. He stood up slowly, a terrifying dark realization washing over his face.

"St. Jude’s Reproductive Center," Dominic spat out the name like poison. "In Flushing."

"Yes!" Hannah looked up, shocked. "How did you know?"

"Because that was the clinic owned by Don Vincenzo Moretti," Dominic said, his voice dripping with venom. "Julianna's father."

Dominic turned toward his desk and slammed his fist onto the solid wood, shattering a crystal paperweight into a dozen shards. Hannah flinched, pulling her legs up onto the sofa.

"Julianna was barren," Dominic explained, his eyes fixed on the rain outside the window. "Her father was obsessed with bloodlines. The Moretti family is one of the oldest mafia dynasties in North America. When Vincenzo realized his daughter couldn't give him an heir, he couldn't accept it. He kept it a secret from me. He used his private clinic to harvest premium genetic material from young, healthy, high-IQ women. He used your eggs, fertilized them with my seed in a laboratory, and implanted the embryos into Julianna."

Hannah felt the room spinning. The horrifying reality crashed into her like a freight train. The three little girls with bright blue eyes, the children she had held in her arms, the girls who had looked at her and spoken their very first word... were her daughters. They had carried her genetic code, her blood, her soul inside them for two years.

"They aren't just your children, Dominic," Hannah whispered, tears flowing freely down her cheeks. "They are my children."

Dominic turned to look at her. The fury in his eyes softened for a brief fraction of a second as he looked at the woman who had unknowingly given him his family. But before he could speak, the emergency comms system on his desk beeped frantically.

Marco's voice came through the speaker, distorted by static. "Boss! We’ve got a problem at the perimeter gates! Three unmarked black vans just rammed the main entrance! It’s Moretti’s men!"

"How did they track us?" Dominic snapped, reaching into his desk drawer and pulling out a matte-black semi-automatic pistol.

"Someone leaked the location of the DNA test, Boss! They know you found out about the clinic!"

Gunfire erupted in the distance, echoing through the massive stone corridors of the estate. Automatic rifle fire ripped through the quiet night air, followed by the shattering of glass on the ground floor.

Hannah gasped, jumping off the couch. "The girls!"

"Get to the nursery!" Dominic commanded, racking the slide of his weapon with a lethal flick of his wrist. "There is a reinforced panic room behind the wardrobe in the nursery. Lock yourselves inside and do not open it for anyone except me!"

May you like

"Dominic, be careful!" Hannah blurted out before she could stop herself.

Dominic looked back at her, his dark eyes gleaming in the dim light of the study. "Protect our daughters, Hannah. I'll handle the trash."
