Chapter 8 - War in Manhattan

Across the Hudson River, in a private emergency clinic hidden beneath a bakery in Little Italy, a heart monitor beeped erratically.

Dominic Vale opened his eyes.

A wave of excruciating agony washed over his torso. He gasped, clutching his chest. He was wrapped in heavy white bandages. IV lines were hooked into his veins.

"Boss! Lie still!" Dr. Vance urged, rushing to the bedside alongside two heavily armed Vale soldiers. "The bullets missed your heart by two centimeters! You lost half your blood!"

Dominic ripped the IV lines out of his arm, ignoring the blood that dripped onto the bedsheets. He swung his legs over the edge of the bed, his dark eyes blazing with murderous rage.

"Hannah..." Dominic growled, his voice thick with blood and gravel. "The children..."

"Marco betrayed us, Boss," one of his soldiers reported grimly. "He took them to Queens. We thought you were dead..."

"I am not dead until Vincenzo Moretti is burning in hell," Dominic snarled, forcing himself to stand. His body shook with pain, but his sheer willpower kept him upright. "Assemble every soldier loyal to the Vale name. Every rifle, every armored vehicle, every blade we own. We are razing Queens to the ground tonight."

Before the soldiers could move, a comms officer rushed into the room holding a military-grade receiver.

"Boss! Look at this! We intercepted an emergency shortwave signal echoing across local bands!"

The officer pressed play. Hannah's soft, desperate voice echoed through the room: "My name is Hannah Mercer! I am being held hostage by Don Moretti in an abandoned warehouse near the Queens waterfront! Please... help us!"

Dominic closed his eyes as a tear cut through the grime on his face. She was alive. His daughters were alive. And she was fighting.

"Track the signal coordinates," Dominic ordered, his tone dropping into a icy, terrifying register. "Tell the men... no captives. No mercy."

Thirty minutes later, the Queens waterfront turned into a slaughterhouse.

A fleet of heavy black SUVs rammed through the corrugated metal gates of the Moretti shipping complex. Dozens of Vale soldiers poured out, opening fire with heavy automatic weapons. Grenades detonated inside the loading bays, flipping trucks and igniting fuel drums into towering infernos.

Inside the cellar, the guard rushed back to Hannah's cell, hearing the thundering explosions above.

"What did you do?!" he screamed at Hannah, reaching for his keys to open the cell.

Before he could unlock the door, the heavy metal door at the top of the cellar stairs blew off its hinges.

Dominic descended the stairs like a demon rising from the underworld. His shirt was soaked in his own re-opened wounds, a combat rifle clamped in his hands. He fired three rounds into the guard's chest without missing a beat.

The guard crumpled to the floor.

Dominic dropped his rifle and threw his body against the cell door, unlocking it with the keys from the guard's belt.

Hannah stood frozen in disbelief. Tears streamed down her face as the man she thought was dead stepped through the door.

"Dominic?" she gasped, her voice choking. "You're... you're alive?"

Dominic didn't say a word. He pulled her into his arms, crushing her against his chest, burying his face into her hair. "I told you... I wouldn't let anyone hurt you."

Lily, Grace, and Emma woke up, rubbing their eyes. When they saw the bloodied giant holding their mother, they squealed in joy.

"Papa! Papa!"

Dominic dropped to his knees, wrapping his strong arms around all four of them, holding his family as the war raged around them.

"Get them out of here, Dominic!" Hannah urged, touching his blood-soaked bandages. "You're bleeding out!"

"Not until I finish this," Dominic said, looking toward the upper floor where heavy boots were echoing down the corridor.
