Chapter 5 - Whispering Pines

The snow fell silently over the dense pine forests of the Adirondack Mountains. Hundreds of miles away from the brutal war waging in Manhattan, the Vale sanctuary—a massive, timber-framed lodge nestled beside a frozen lake—stood wrapped in total isolation.

Three weeks had passed since the night of the attack.

Inside the lodge's spacious living room, a massive stone fireplace crackled, spreading golden heat across the wooden floors. Lily, Grace, and Emma were sitting on a plush sheepskin rug, giggling loudly as they drew pictures with colored crayons.

"Look! Mama!" Lily shouted happily, holding up a drawing of five stick figures holding hands under a yellow sun.

Hannah smiled, kneeling beside them on the rug. Her heart swelled with a deep, profound joy she had never known existed. In three weeks, freed from the trauma of their past and wrapped in love, her daughters had transformed. They were no longer silent, terrified shells. They were bright, energetic, and talkative two-year-olds who filled the cabin with laughter.

"It's beautiful, Lily," Hannah said, kissing the little girl's cheek. "Is this Papa?" she asked, pointing to the largest stick figure.

"Yes! Big Papa!" Emma giggled.

Footsteps echoed down the wooden staircase. Dominic entered the room. He had discarded his dark suits for a simple black cashmere sweater and dark jeans. Without the sharp lines of his mob attire, he looked younger, broader, and dangerously handsome.

He walked over to the rug, dropping down beside Hannah. The girls immediately piled onto him, climbing his back like little bears. Dominic laughed—a low, rich sound that sent a pleasant shiver down Hannah's spine.

"You're late for arts and crafts, Boss," Hannah teased softly, her eyes meeting his.

"I was on the encrypted line with Marco," Dominic said, his expression sobering slightly. "The city is quiet for now. Moretti has gone into hiding."

"Do you... do you have to go back?" Hannah asked, her voice dropping into a quiet whisper. The thought of Dominic returning to the blood-soaked streets of New York terrified her in ways she didn't want to admit.

Dominic looked at her, his intense dark eyes searching her face. Over the past three weeks, the icy barrier between them had completely dissolved. He had seen her fiercely protect his daughters; she had seen him tenderly comfort them during nightmares. They were no longer a mobster and his hostage. They were two parents bound by blood, trauma, and an undeniable, magnetic attraction.

"I have to finish it, Hannah," Dominic said quietly, reaching out to tuck a strand of hair behind her ear. His fingers brushed against her cheek, warm and calloused. "I spent ten years building an empire because I thought power was the only thing that could keep me safe. But looking at you... looking at them... I realize I don't want an empire anymore. I just want this."

Hannah's breath caught in her throat. "Dominic..."

"I didn't choose how you came into my life, Hannah," Dominic whispered, leaning closer until his lips were inches from hers. "But keeping you in it is the only thing I care about now."

He leaned in and pressed his lips against hers. The kiss was slow, deep, and filled with a raw, desperate tenderness. Hannah closed her eyes, wrapping her arms around his neck, melting into his touch. The crackling fire, the falling snow outside, the giggles of their daughters—everything faded away, leaving only the heat of their shared devotion.

When Dominic pulled back, his forehead rested against hers. "I will end Moretti, Hannah. And when I do, I will give you and our daughters the peaceful life you deserve."

Before Hannah could answer, the lodge's perimeter alarm blared a sharp, deafening tone through the speakers.

Red emergency lights flashed across the wooden ceiling.

Dominic instantly stood up, shielding Hannah and the girls behind his body as the heavy front doors were suddenly blown inward by an explosive charge.
