Chapter 4 - THE GOLDEN CAGE

By the next morning, Nora’s life had been completely uprooted.

A private black town car arrived outside her modest apartment building at 7:00 AM. Two suits in immaculate black tuxedos stood guard at the entrance of her building, startling her landlord into absolute silence.

Nora stepped down the stairs wearing a simple dark blue trousers suit, her medical bag over her shoulder. Her younger brother, Leo, a twenty-one-year-old pre-med student at Loyola, watched from the window with wide, anxious eyes.

"Nora," Leo had warned her before she left the apartment. "These people are news headlines, Nora. Julian Mercer’s uncle was assassinated in broad daylight three years ago. You can't get involved with them!"

"I'm managing a stroke patient, Leo," Nora had replied, checking her stethoscope. "I'm doing my job. The money will pay off your tuition debts and clear our rent for the next five years."

When Nora arrived at the Mercer estate—a breathtaking, fortified mansion tucked behind high iron gates in Lake Forest—she was led directly to the East Wing.

Claire was lying in a luxurious bed surrounded by state-of-the-art medical monitoring equipment that Julian had bought and installed overnight. Two registered nurses stood at attention, waiting for Nora’s instructions.

"Dr. Bennett!" Claire smiled, her speech noticeably improved from the previous night. She was sitting up, sipping warm tea. "My brother threatened to fire the nurses three times before you arrived."

"He's overbearing," Nora said, offering a warm, genuine smile as she stepped up to check Claire’s reflexes. "How is the headache?"

"Mild," Claire replied. "Julian told me what happened. He told me you dropped your tray and took charge of the room. He said you yelled at his chief bodyguard, Marco."

Nora laughed softly, tapping Claire’s right knee with a reflex hammer. "Marco had a firm grip. I was on an adrenaline high."

"Julian doesn't let anyone talk to him the way you did," Claire said, her eyes turning serious. "Not politicians, not police chiefs, and certainly not his associates. He respects you, Nora. And that makes you very dangerous to his enemies."

Before Nora could digest Claire’s words, the heavy oak doors of the bedroom opened.

Julian walked in, wearing a tailored navy suit. His dark eyes immediately swept the room, resting on Nora. The subtle tension in his shoulders seemed to ease the moment he saw her beside his sister.

"Good morning, Dr. Bennett," Julian said smoothly.

"Good morning, Mr. Mercer," Nora said, reviewing Claire's chart. "Her vitals are exceptional. I've scheduled a physical therapist to begin motor rehabilitation at two o'clock."

"Good," Julian nodded. He signaled to the nurses, who promptly bowed their heads and left the room, closing the doors behind them.

"Is something wrong?" Nora asked, picking up on the sudden shift in atmosphere.

Julian walked to the window, glancing down at the driveway where four black SUVs were parked.

"My sister’s stroke was not an accident of nature," Julian said, his voice dropping into a register that made Nora's skin prickle with goosebumps.

Nora froze. "What do you mean? The CT scan cleared her of traumatic hemorrhage. It was an ischemic event."

"Claire’s toxicology report came back from my private lab an hour ago," Julian revealed, pulling a folded paper from his pocket and handing it to Nora. "Her blood contained traces of Synthetic Ergotamine—a rare vascular toxin that causes extreme arterial spasms, mimicking a massive ischemic stroke in young, healthy adults."

Nora’s blood ran cold as she scanned the lab results. "She was poisoned?"

"At the restaurant," Julian confirmed, his eyes burning with a dark, lethal fire. "Someone at my private table slipped it into her champagne glass. They wanted to kill my sister right in front of me, to break my resolve before the dock syndicate negotiations this Friday."

May you like

Nora gasped, looking over at Claire, who turned her head away, tears glimmering in her eyes.

"And you," Julian added, turning his gaze back to Nora, "saved her from their poison. Which means whoever tried to kill my sister now knows that a broke waitress ruined their perfect murder."
