Chapter 7 - THE MEDICAL BOARD SIEGE

On Thursday morning, the Illinois State Medical Board convened in a high-rise courtroom in downtown Chicago.
Nora sat at the defense table, flanked by two top-tier corporate attorneys whom Julian had retained for her at a cost of a hundred thousand dollars. She wore a pristine black suit, her dark hair pulled back into a tight, professional chignon.
Across the room sat Dr. Robert Vance, looking smug and triumphant, surrounded by hospital lawyers. Beside him was Dr. Marcus Thorne—Nora’s former chief of surgery at Cook County, the man who had framed her six months ago to cover his own illegal opioid ring.
The head of the disciplinary board, Dr. Elizabeth Hayes, slammed her gavel down.
"This hearing is called to order regarding the status of Dr. Nora Bennett," Dr. Hayes announced sternly. "Dr. Thorne, you have presented new evidence alleging that Dr. Bennett engaged in systemic theft of Schedule II narcotics during her residency."
Dr. Thorne stood up smoothly. "Yes, Madam Chair. We discovered pharmacy logs bearing Dr. Bennett’s digital signature showing twenty missing vials of fentanyl."
Nora’s lead attorney, Arthur Pendelton, stood up calmly. "Madam Chair, my client categorically denies these absurd allegations. Furthermore, we submit that Dr. Thorne and Dr. Vance are engaged in a retaliatory smear campaign to cover up their own gross misconduct."
Thorne laughed condescendingly. "Smear campaign? Dr. Bennett is currently employed as a domestic servant for a known criminal enterprise! She was seen at Northwestern ER last week practicing medicine while suspended!"
"She saved a human life from acute stroke while Dr. Vance hesitated!" Pendelton countered sharply.
"Enough!" Dr. Hayes hammered her gavel. "Without concrete proof of forgery regarding these pharmacy logs, this board has no choice but to permanently revoke Dr. Bennett’s license to practice medicine in the state of Illinois."
Nora felt as though the floor were opening beneath her. She squeezed her eyes shut, waiting for the death blow to her life’s dream.
Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the back of the courtroom burst open.
A cold breeze swept through the room as four men in tailored dark suits entered, clearing a path.
Julian Mercer walked in.
He moved with absolute, terrifying calm, wearing a charcoal pinstripe suit, his hands tucked casually into his pockets. Behind him walked two men carrying heavy steel briefcases, followed by a trembling man in handcuffs—Cook County’s Chief IT Systems Administrator.
The courtroom fell dead silent. Even the board members looked terrified.
"Who are you, sir?!" Dr. Hayes demanded, though her voice shook slightly. "This is a closed administrative hearing! You cannot barge in here!"
"My name is Julian Mercer," Julian said smoothly, stepping up to the center aisle. "And I don't barge into rooms, Dr. Hayes. I take ownership of them."
"Security!" Dr. Vance yelled, standing up. "Remove this man!"
"The security guards outside are currently having a peaceful cup of coffee, Dr. Vance," Julian replied coldly, turning his gaze toward the terrified silver-haired doctor. "I suggest you sit down before I make your position far more uncomfortable."
Julian signaled to his attorneys, who stepped forward and opened the steel briefcases on the board's desk.
"What is the meaning of this?" Dr. Hayes gasped, looking at the mountain of documents.
"In those briefcases," Julian explained, his voice ringing across the courtroom like a death sentence, "you will find the encrypted server logs from Cook County Trauma, retrieved forty-five minutes ago by federal forensic investigators working under my personal retainer."
Dr. Thorne’s face went completely ghost-white.
"Those logs prove," Julian continued, "that the digital signatures on those pharmacy files were forged using Dr. Thorne’s master administrator key six months ago to frame Dr. Bennett when she threatened to report his illegal opioid distribution ring to the DEA."
Julian turned to look directly at Thorne. "Additionally, we have bank records showing Dr. Vance received a two-hundred-thousand-dollar transfer from an offshore account owned by Dr. Thorne to ensure Dr. Bennett’s suspension was upheld today."
Gasps erupted among the board members.
Dr. Thorne tried to bolt toward the side exit, but two of Julian’s bodyguards stepped into his path, blocking him instantly.
Dr. Hayes stared at the banking files in utter shock. She looked at Thorne, then at Vance, and finally at Nora.
"This... this is massive criminal fraud," Dr. Hayes stammered, slamming her gavel down with thunderous force. "This hearing is adjourned! Federal authorities are to be notified immediately! Dr. Bennett..."
Dr. Hayes looked at Nora, her expression shifting to profound apology. "...Your suspension is lifted immediately with full exoneration and an official apology from the State of Illinois."
Nora stood frozen, tears streaming down her face as the room erupted into chaos.

Through the crowd of lawyers and fleeing doctors, Julian walked up to her. He pulled out a silk handkerchief and gently wiped the tears from her cheeks.
"I told you," Julian whispered softly, his dark eyes brimming with quiet pride. "Nobody takes your license."
