Chapter 5 - SHADOWS AT THE ESTATE

The realization hit Nora like a tidal wave of ice water.
She hadn't just intervened in a medical emergency; she had inadvertently disrupted an assassination plot executed by one of the most ruthless criminal networks in the Midwest.
"Mr. Mercer..." Nora breathed, her fingers tightening around the toxicology paper. "I... I didn't see anyone put anything in her glass. I was serving the main course at the side table."
"I know you didn't," Julian said, stepping closer to her, his tone softening just enough to steady her rising panic. "My men are reviewing every second of the restaurant’s security footage. But until I find out who bought that toxin, this estate is under full lockdown. You and your brother are moving into the guest house effective immediately."
"My brother?" Nora protested, her posture stiffening. "No. Leo has classes. I can't drag my family into your mob war!"
"Your brother is currently being picked up by Marco in a armored vehicle," Julian said without a trace of apology. "If my enemies know you saved Claire, they will view your brother as a leverage point. Do you want him sitting in an unprotected college dorm, Dr. Bennett?"
Nora bit her lip, rage and fear warring inside her chest. He was manipulative, controlling, and terrifyingly efficient—and worst of all, he was entirely right.
"If anything happens to Leo, Julian," Nora threatened, her eyes flashing with pure fury, "I don't care how many bodyguards you have. I will make your life a living hell."
Julian didn't get angry. Instead, a slow, fascinated smile spread across his handsome face. He found her fierce protective instinct captivating.
"Understood, Doctor," Julian said softly. "Your brother will be safe. I give you my word."
By evening, Leo had arrived at the sprawling Mercer guest house, wide-eyed and terrified by the armed guards patrolling the perimeter with Belgian Malinois attack dogs. Nora spent two hours calming him down before returning to the main house to check on Claire’s evening medications.
As she walked down the grand marble hallway of the main house, she heard hushed, aggressive voices coming from Julian’s private study.
The double doors were slightly ajar.
"...You're letting a doctor dictate your schedule, Julian!" a harsh, older voice rasped from inside. It belonged to Dominic Mercer, Julian’s ambitious, hot-tempered uncle who controlled the family’s trucking operations. "The Moretti syndicate is pressing us on the riverfront leases! They think you're soft because Claire got sick!"
"Claire was poisoned, Dominic," Julian’s voice replied, quiet, cold, and deadlier than a loaded gun. "And she didn't get 'sick.' She survived because I have people working for me who possess actual intelligence."
"She’s a civvie!" Dominic spat. "A disgraced doctor working as a servant! Word on the street is you've got her living on the estate! The capos are whispering, Julian. They think you're compromised by a pretty face!"
Nora held her breath, pressing her back against the oak wall outside the door.
"Let them whisper," Julian said smoothly. "And if any capo—or any member of this family—looks at Dr. Bennett with anything less than absolute respect, I will personally throw them into the Chicago River with concrete around their ankles. Is that clear, Uncle?"
A long, suffocating silence followed.
"Crystal," Dominic muttered bitterly.
Nora heard heavy footsteps approaching the door and quickly backed away, slipping into the neighboring library just as Dominic Mercer stormed out into the hallway, his face dark with fury.
Nora leaned against the mahogany bookshelf in the quiet library, her heart hammering against her ribs.

"Listening at keyholes is a dangerous habit on this estate, Dr. Bennett."
Nora jumped. Julian was standing in the doorway of the library, holding a glass of amber scotch, his dark eyes watching her from the shadows.
