Chapter 9 - THE SURGEON’S REDEMPTION

Julian collapsed against the base of the grand staircase, his breathing heavy and ragged.
Nora dropped to her knees beside him, her hands instantly tearing open his shirt.
A high-velocity gunshot wound was located in his left upper quadrant, three inches below his ribcage. Blood was spurting rapidly—a dark, pulsing stream that indicated a nicked mesenteric artery.
"Marco! Get my trauma kit from the medical wing NOW!" Nora screamed at the chief bodyguard, who was standing froze in shock. "CALL AN AMBULANCE!"
"No ambulance..." Julian gasped, his hand weakly gripping Nora’s wrist, his face rapidly turning pale from blood loss. "The press... rival families... if they know I'm hit... the empire falls..."
"You are bleeding to death, Julian!" Nora yelled, tears spilling from her eyes as she pressed both hands firmly against his bleeding wound, applying heavy pressure. "You hit an artery! You'll bleed out in ten minutes!"
"You're a surgeon..." Julian whispered, looking up into her eyes with absolute, unfaltering trust, even as his consciousness began to slip away. "Operate on me... here..."
Nora looked around the crimson-lit foyer. The floor was covered in blood. There was no sterile operating room, no anesthesia team, no scrub nurses.
It was a nightmare scenario—the exact kind of chaos she had faced at Cook County Trauma on her worst nights.
"Dr. Bennett!" Marco returned, slamming a heavy black medical chest onto the floor beside her. "I have the emergency surgical kit from your wing!"
Nora closed her eyes for one brief second, taking a deep, shuddering breath. The fear, the panic, the doubt that had haunted her for six months dissolved into pure, razor-sharp medical focus.
She was Dr. Nora Bennett. She was a trauma surgeon. And the man who had saved her life was dying in her arms.
"Marco," Nora ordered, her voice transforming into a thunderous, commanding force. "Set up halogen work lights over this table! Get three clean sheets! Prepare the portable suction unit and two bags of O-negative blood from the storage fridge!"
"Yes, Doctor!" Marco yelled, sprinting to carry out her orders.
For the next two hours, the grand foyer of the Mercer estate became a battleground for a man's life.
Nora scrubbed her hands with iodine, pulled on sterile gloves, and administered local anesthetic and heavy sedatives directly into Julian’s IV line. Under the bright glare of the halogen work lights, with Marco holding the suction tube, Nora performed an emergency exploratory laparotomy right on the heavy oak dining table.
Her fingers worked with blinding speed and exquisite precision. She located the bleeding mesenteric artery, clamped it off using curved hemostatic forceps, and sutured the vessel shut with surgical silk.
She checked the abdominal cavity for secondary organ damage. The bullet had passed clean through without nicking his bowel or spleen.
"Suture," Nora held out her hand.
Marco handed her the needle driver.
With steady, flawless stitches, Nora closed the deep muscle tissue and skin, finishing the emergency procedure just as the first light of dawn began to creep through the shattered glass windows of the mansion.
She stepped back, pulling off her blood-stained gloves, her body trembling with sheer physical and emotional exhaustion.
Julian’s heart monitor beat with a steady, strong rhythm. His blood pressure was stabilizing.

Nora fell into an armchair beside the table, burying her face in her hands, weeping tears of profound relief.
She had done it. She had saved him.
