Chapter 5 - The Geography of Forgiveness

By the time Callum returned to Lake Forest, the fog had lifted, revealing a brilliant, starry sky that reflected off the quiet waters of the lake. He walked up the stairs to the master wing, his boots making no sound on the heavy Persian rugs.

He pushed the door open to find Iris sitting in the large armchair by the window, a book open on her lap, though her eyes were fixed on the sleeping form of Wren in the center of the bed. She had changed into the cream cashmere sweater he had given her, making her look incredibly soft against the dark wood of the room.

"Is it over?" she asked quietly as he stepped inside, closing the door behind him.

"The Kanes have accepted the settlement," Callum said, pulling off his overcoat and sitting on the edge of the bed near Wren’s feet. "The territory is secure. My mother has been removed from the state. There is no one left to look for you, Iris. You are completely safe."

Iris looked down at her hands, her fingers tracing the edge of the book page. "I spent three years looking over my shoulder, Callum. Every time a black car slowed down near the park, every time a man in a suit looked at me too long at the grocery store, I thought it was the end. I had to learn how to be a mother while I was terrified for my daughter’s life."

"I am sorry," Callum whispered, the words feeling foreign and heavy in his mouth. He had never apologized to anyone in his entire life; his world didn't allow for mistakes, let alone regrets. But looking at the thinness of her wrists, the exhaustion in her face, he felt a profound, aching grief for the years he had lost. "If I had known what my mother had done—"

"I know," Iris interrupted gently, looking up to meet his gray eyes. "I saw your face on Michigan Avenue, Callum. I know you didn't know. If you had known, you would have torn the world apart to find her. That’s what terrified me the most. I didn't want her raised in the blood, Callum. I didn't want her to grow up thinking that love is something you secure with armed guards and iron gates."

Callum looked over at Wren, who had rolled onto her side, her tiny mouth slightly open as she breathed the clean, mountain-pine air of the room. "The empire is being dismantled, Iris. I’ve already liquidated forty percent of the street assets. By next month, the Voss name will be completely detached from the Chicago docks. I am building a legitimate future for her. A clean future."

Iris rose from the chair, her bare feet making no sound as she walked over to the bed. She sat down beside him, her hand extending slowly until her fingers brushed against his scarred knuckles.

"It will take more than a corporate transfer to clean the blood off these walls, Callum," she said softly, her eyes filled with a beautiful, fragile hope that broke through the final remnants of his defenses. "But it's a start."

Callum turned his palm up, his large, powerful fingers closing around her hand with a gentle, protective warmth that signaled the absolute end of his exile. He had spent his entire life fighting for a throne made of ash. Now, with his wife and daughter safely within his walls, he realized he had finally found his home.
