Chapter 7 - The Hunt in the Shadows

The drive to Detroit was a blur of high-velocity transit across the flat, winter-stripped landscape of Michigan. Callum sat in the rear of the armored Suburban, his laptop open as he tracked the financial digital signatures Vivienne had used to clear the mercenaries' retainers.
"We have the location of the warehouse, Boss," Ethan reported from the front passenger seat, adjusting his tactical earpiece. "It’s an old auto parts foundry near the riverfront. Vivienne’s personal vehicle was spotted clearing the industrial park gate twenty minutes ago. She’s personally supervising the second wave of the sabotage operation."
"Do not use non-lethal options, Ethan," Callum said, his voice dropping into that quiet, dead register that signaled the absolute end of his mercy. "The time for negotiations ended when she touched my logistics warehouses. If a single mercenary raises a weapon, erase them from the ledger."
At exactly 3:00 PM, the Voss convoy crashed through the rusted security fence of the Detroit foundry, the heavy armored vehicles pinning Vivienne’s sports car against the concrete loading dock. Eight elite Voss operators flooded the building, their weapons clearing the shadows with lethal, military precision.
The firefight lasted less than ninety seconds. The mercenaries, realizing they were facing the personal elite force of the Voss family rather than a common street crew, dropped their automatic rifles and surrendered into the grease-stained dust of the floor.
Callum walked through the smoke into the foundry’s central office, his long black coat billowing behind him. Vivienne sat behind a metal desk, her hands raised slowly, her face contorted in an expression of pure, unadulterated venom as two Voss operators held her captains at gunpoint.
"You think you’ve won, Callum?" she spat, her voice shaking with rage. "My father will never forgive you for this. Even if you kill me, the Kane family will burn Chicago to the ground to avenge my name!"
"Your father isn't going to avenge you, Vivienne," Callum said smoothly, tossing a digital recording device onto the desk. "Because your father is the one who gave me the access codes to your personal bank accounts two hours ago."
Vivienne froze, her eyes widening with a sudden, shocked realization of her own isolation.

"Donato Kane is a businessman, Vivienne," Callum continued, leaning over the desk until his face was inches from hers. "He knows that a daughter who runs a private mercenary war against his primary trade partner is a liability to the family balance sheet. He traded you to me in exchange for fifteen percent of the rail yard distribution rights. You are officially exiled from Chicago, Vivienne. If you ever step foot inside the state of Illinois again, the federal marshals will arrest you for the interstate transportation of illegal explosives."
He turned his back on her, leaving her trapped in the empty room, her name permanently stripped from the ledgers of the Chicago underworld.
