Chapter 8 - The Slow Return of Light

With Vivienne permanently removed from the equation, the midwest transport corridors returned to a quiet, profitable stability. The German logistics acquisition was finalized on a crisp, golden morning in late November, transferring sixty percent of the Voss family’s street holdings into a completely legitimate international corporate structure.

The mansion in Lake Forest was no longer a fortress; it had become a home. The heavy tactical arrays at the inner fence were dismantled, replaced by a beautiful white cedar picket fence that ran straight down to the sand of the beach.

Callum spent his mornings working in the glass-walled sunroom overlooking the lake, his laptop open as he monitored the clean international trade indices, his long black coats replaced by comfortable cashmere sweaters and soft leather loafers.

"Daddy! Look!" Wren’s voice echoed through the hallway as she sprinted into the sunroom, her small feet bare against the polished hardwood. She was carrying a massive, colorful drawing of a steam engine, her gray eyes sparkling with delight.

Callum caught her by the waist, lifting her onto his lap, his large, powerful hands gently smoothing her soft curls. "That’s a beautiful train, Wren. Did Mommy help you with the wheels?"

"Mommy did the smoke," Wren giggled, pointing toward the doorway where Iris stood, wearing a simple white linen dress, a mug of hot coffee between her hands. She looked radiant, the purple shadows beneath her eyes completely gone, replaced by a deep, beautiful peace that illuminated her features.

"The local preschool called, Callum," Iris said, stepping into the sunroom and leaning against the desk beside him. "They have an open slot for Wren in the winter semester. It’s a beautiful little school near the library in Lake Forest. No guards. No gates."

Callum reached out, his hand closing around her waist, pulling her close against his side as he looked out at the quiet, blue water of the lake. "That’s exactly where she belongs, Iris. In the light."
