Chapter 4 - Unmasking the Serpent

The silence in the library was absolute.
Vanessa stared at Graham, her mind racing, trying to calculate how much he knew versus how much he was bluffing. She forced a hollow, nervous laugh.
"Graham, darling, what are you talking about?" she pleaded, taking a step toward him with her hands raised. "You’re confused. The noise in your ears is making you hallucinate! Nora’s daughter is disturbed—she’s a little liar!"
"Lily doesn't lie," Graham said, his voice echoing like thunder. "And she doesn't speak. She signs. A language my grandmother taught me thirty years ago."
Vanessa went dead pale. The color drained from her face, leaving her silver gown looking like a shroud.
"You... you know sign language?" she whispered, horror dawning in her eyes.
"Every word," Graham said coldly. "She warned me that the 'pretty lady' was putting medicine in my cup. And Dr. Rhodes just confirmed that the champagne you personally handed me ten minutes ago contains enough ototoxic poison to deafen an elephant."
Vanessa backed away, her heel catching on the edge of the Persian rug. She looked at Dr. Rhodes, then at Mark, the head of security, who moved to block the library doors.
"Richard!" Vanessa screamed toward the door. "Richard, get in here!"
The side door of the library opened, and Richard Vance, the CFO, stepped in, holding a leather briefcase. But instead of coming to Vanessa's aid, Vance looked terrified. Behind him stepped two uniformed detectives from the Chicago Police Department.
"It’s over, Vanessa," Vance stammered, pulling a handkerchief from his pocket to wipe the sweat from his forehead. "They showed me the bank transfers from the offshore accounts. They know we leveraged the short-position stocks against Mercer Ridge!"
Vanessa turned on Vance like a rabid animal. "You weak, pathetic coward! You were the one who bought the pharmaceuticals from the dark web supplier!"
"And you were the one who administered them to your fiancé!" Detective Miller announced, stepping forward with pair of steel handcuffs. "Vanessa Hale, you are under arrest for attempted murder, conspiracy to commit corporate fraud, and poisoning."
Vanessa thrashed as the detective grabbed her wrists, her pristine silver gown tearing against the edge of the mahogany desk. Her flawless facade crumbled completely, revealing the ugly, venomous monster beneath.
"You think you’ve won, Graham?!" Vanessa shrieked, her face twisted in rage as the cuffs clicked around her wrists. "You’re already half-deaf! You’re damaged goods! You’ll never recover! I should have doubled the dose months ago!"

Graham stood unmoving as the police dragged his former fiancée past him. He looked her dead in the eye, his voice low and unwavering.
"My hearing will recover with treatment, Vanessa," Graham said softly. "But you will spend the rest of your life in a silent cell."
