Chapter 5 - The House of Healing

Forty-eight hours after the engagement party, the Mercer estate was silent once more, but it was no longer the silence of a grave. It was the peaceful quiet of recovery.

The scandal had rocked Wall Street. Vanessa Hale and Richard Vance were held without bail, facing federal charges of attempted murder, wire fraud, and market manipulation. The board of Mercer Ridge Technologies had unanimously reaffirmed Graham’s position as CEO, expressing overwhelming relief that the plot had been exposed before any permanent damage was done to the company.

Under Dr. Rhodes’ intensive detox program and specialized hyperbaric oxygen therapy, the inflammation in Graham’s inner ears had begun to recede. The constant, unbearable ringing was fading, replaced by the clear, natural sounds of the world around him.

Sitting on the sunlit terrace overlooking Lake Michigan, Graham listened to the soft rustle of autumn leaves and the gentle lap of waves against the shore.

A soft footstep sounded on the stone tiles.

Graham turned. Nora Bennett stood near the glass doors, holding a silver tray with fresh coffee and toast. She looked nervous, wearing a simple cardigan and jeans instead of her housekeeper's uniform.

"Mr. Mercer," Nora said softly. "I... I brought your morning coffee. Dr. Rhodes said you could have caffeine again."

"Thank you, Nora," Graham said with a warm smile. "Please, sit down."

Nora hesitated. "Sir, I don't want to intrude. My sister is arriving this afternoon to help me pack my things. I know you’ve been extremely generous not pressing charges against the staff, but Lily and I will be out of your house by nightfall."

Graham set his coffee cup down, his brow furrowing. "Pack your things? Who told you to pack your things?"

Nora blinked, surprised. "Well... the police investigation is over. The engagement is off. You don't need a full-time live-in staff anymore, and... I assumed after everything that happened..."

"Nora," Graham interrupted gently, standing up. "You and Lily saved my life. If Lily hadn't signed that warning to me, I would be completely deaf today, and Vanessa would control my company. You are not leaving this estate."

Nora’s eyes filled with tears. "Mr. Mercer, I’m just a housekeeper—"

"You are the woman who protected her child in a house full of vipers," Graham corrected firmly. "And Lily is a brilliant, brave little girl. I’ve already spoken with my foundation’s educational board. We are establishing a permanent endowment for deaf and hard-of-hearing children in Chicago, named the Lily Bennett Foundation. And I want you to manage the estate’s residential operations as the full-time Director of Estate Services, with a salary that ensures you and Lily will never have to worry about money again."

Nora covered her mouth with both hands, a sob escaping her throat. "Mr. Mercer... I don't know what to say. I can't accept all of this!"

"You can, and you will," Graham said with a smile.

Just then, a small head peeked out from behind the French doors. Lily stepped onto the terrace, holding her one-eyed stuffed rabbit. She wore a bright yellow cardigan and red sneakers.

When she saw Graham, her face lit up. She ran across the stone terrace, stopping right in front of him.

She raised her little hands and signed rapidly: "Ringing gone?"

Graham knelt on the stone floor, his dark suit touching the dust, and signed back with a big, genuine smile: "Ringing gone. I hear everything now."

Lily squealed with delight and threw her tiny arms around Graham’s neck. Graham held the little girl tight, his heart feeling fuller than it had in years.
