Chapter 8 - Fire and Rain

Julian Hale screamed as the blinding light burned his night-adapted eyes, firing three wild shots toward the ceiling. Glass crystals showered down like rain.
Mark stepped out from the western archway, firing a non-lethal beanbag round that struck Julian squarely in the chest, knocking the weapon from his hands and sending him crashing through a glass display case.
Vanessa gasped, scrambling backwards across the slippery marble floor toward the terrace doors. She pulled a concealed ceramic knife from her sleeve, her eyes wide with unhinged insanity.
"Graham!" she screamed into the glaring light. "You ruined my life! I was supposed to have everything! The money, the status, the company!"
"You were never going to have anything, Vanessa," Graham’s voice sounded right behind her.
Vanessa spun around, lunging with the knife.
Graham dodged the strike with practiced ease, caught her wrist, and twisted it downward with bone-shattering force. The knife clattered harmlessly onto the marble floor.
Graham shoved her back against the limestone pillar, holding her wrists pinned behind her back with one hand while Mark tackled her brother Julian to the floor, slapping heavy tactical flex-cuffs around his wrists.
Vanessa thrashed against Graham’s grip, panting violently, her eyes filled with bitter, venomous hatred.
"You're a monster, Graham!" she spat, blood trickling from her split lip. "A deaf, broken monster!"
Graham looked down at her with pure, calm detachment. He pulled his tiny hearing aid from his ear, holding it up so she could see it in the bright light.
"I can hear the rain, Vanessa," Graham said softly. "I can hear the sea. And most importantly... I can hear the police sirens coming up the driveway."
Dozens of red and blue police lights cut through the storm outside as state trooper vehicles and FBI tactical units swarmed the estate grounds.
Within minutes, Julian and Vanessa Hale were loaded into heavily guarded armored police vans, faced with additional federal terrorism, escape, and armed assault charges that guaranteed neither would ever see the sun as free citizens again.
As the police vehicles drove away into the rainy night, Graham walked back into the grand foyer.
The heavy steel door of the panic vault opened. Nora ran out, carrying Lily in her arms.
When Lily saw Graham standing unharmed in the foyer, she squirmed out of her mother's grip, ran across the hall, and threw herself into Graham’s arms.

Graham caught her, lifting her high in the air, laughing as she patted his cheeks to make sure he was real.
Nora walked up, tears streaming down her face, and threw her arms around both of them. Graham wrapped his free arm around Nora’s waist, holding his family tight against his chest as the storm outside slowly faded into a quiet, peaceful dawn.
