Chapter 7 - The Last Stand at Lake Forest

"Lock down the estate immediately," Graham ordered calmly, though his jaw was set like iron. "Activate the tactical perimeter shields, alert the local sheriff, and move Nora and Lily to the panic vault beneath the master suite."
Nora saw the sudden change in Graham’s expression and stepped forward, her hand clutching her chest. "Graham? What is it? What happened?"
Graham took Nora’s hands in his, his grip firm and reassuring. "Vanessa broke out of transport with her brother's help. They are on their way here. But I promise you, Nora, they will never hurt you or Lily again."
"No!" Nora cried, tears springing to her eyes. "Graham, you can't face them alone! Julian Hale was in the Special Forces—he’s dangerous!"
"He’s trespassing on my home," Graham said, his voice dropping into a lethal, authoritative register. "Mark and six armed security operatives are already locking down the perimeter. I need you to take Lily into the safe room right now."
Nora looked into Graham’s eyes, seeing not the vulnerable man who had been poisoned six months ago, but a fierce, protective guardian who would burn the world down to protect his family.
She leaned up and pressed a quick, fierce kiss to his cheek. "Be careful. Please."
Five minutes later, Nora and Lily were safely locked inside the subterranean steel panic vault beneath the mansion, equipped with independent air filtration and live surveillance monitors.
Outside, a storm rolled in off Lake Michigan. Heavy rain lashed against the French doors, thunder shaking the foundations of the limestone estate.
In the dark, grand foyer, Graham stood near the foot of the sweeping marble staircase. He wore a dark raincoat, holding a heavy tactical flashlight and a legally registered sidearm. Beside him stood Mark, his security chief, holding an automatic shotgun.
"They breached the southern gate, Mr. Mercer," Mark whispered, checking his wrist monitor. "Infrared cameras picked up two targets moving through the rose garden toward the service entrance."
"They think they know this house," Graham said softly, clicking off his flashlight and melting into the shadows of the grand corridor. "Let them come."
The heavy glass of the service entrance shattered as Julian Hale kicked the door open. He was a tall, scarred man in tactical gear, holding a suppressed pistol. Behind him stumbled Vanessa, her orange prison jumpsuit torn and rain-soaked, her face twisted in psychotic desperation.
"Where is he?!" Vanessa shrieked over the sound of the thunder. "Where is Graham?! I want to watch him die!"
"Shut up, Vanessa!" Julian growled, sweeping his weapon across the dark kitchen. "We get the diamond reserves from his private safe, eliminate Mercer, and catch the boat at the pier! Keep moving!"
They advanced down the dark hallway toward the central ballroom.

Suddenly, the massive crystal chandelier above the ballroom burst into blinding, multi-thousand-lumen floodlight, completely blinding Julian and Vanessa.
"Now!" Graham’s voice echoed like a titan’s judgment through the estate's surround-sound speaker system.
