Chapter 5 - The Shadow Falls

At 5:30 A.M., the heavy double doors of the surgical suite clicked open.
Dr. Vance walked out, removing his surgical mask, his face lined with deep exhaustion, but a broad smile broke through as he looked at Josephine and Raphael.
Josephine stood up so fast her chair nearly tipped over. "Doctor?"
"He made it," Dr. Vance announced cleanly. "The aortic valve replacement was a complete success. His heart is beating on its own. We’ve moved him to the pediatric ICU. He’s going to make a full recovery, Josephine."
A strangled, breathless sob escaped Josephine’s lips. She covered her face, her body shaking as months of agony, terror, and exhaustion finally broke open.
Raphael reached out, catching her shoulders, pulling her firmly against his chest. She buried her face in his damp shirt, crying tears of overwhelming relief, her hands gripping his back tightly. Raphael wrapped his arms around her, holding her close, resting his cheek against her dark hair as he let out a long, silent breath of his own.
"Thank you, Doctor," Raphael said over her head, nodding toward Vance.
"Thank Mr. Orsini," Vance said quietly to Josephine. "He had the top pediatric heart surgeon in the country flown in on a private jet at two in the morning to assist."
Josephine pulled back slightly, looking up at Raphael with wide, tear-filled eyes. "You did that?"
"I told you I don't break promises," Raphael said softly.
Before they could say another word, the emergency lights in the hallway flickered ominously. The gentle hum of the hospital’s main power grid dropped, replaced by the heavy, mechanical thrum of back-up emergency generators.
Raphael’s posture shifted instantly. His hand dropped to his side, his eyes narrowing as he scanned the corridor.
Gideon Marsh rushed around the corner, his radio buzzing violently.
"Raphael, we’ve got a problem," Gideon said, his voice clipped and low. "The hospital’s main power lines just got cut from the basement junction box. And three black vans just pulled into the ambulance bay downstairs."
Josephine gasped, fear instantly replacing her relief. "Moretti?"
"Dominic Moretti realized he’s trapped," Raphael deduced instantly, his eyes cold as ice. "He knows the federal indictment comes down on Monday. He’s not here to threaten me anymore. He’s here to take Josephine and the financial ledgers her father left behind before I can deliver them."
"He’s crazy!" Dr. Vance shouted. "This is a children’s hospital!"
"Men like Dominic don't care about hospitals, Doctor," Raphael said, stepping in front of Josephine defensively. "Gideon, how many men do we have on the floor?"
"Six," Gideon replied, pulling a heavy tactical weapon from beneath his coat. "Plus the hospital security crew, but they aren't equipped for a mob war."
"They don't need to be," Raphael said. He turned to Josephine, taking her face in both of his hands, forcing her to look directly into his eyes.
"Listen to me, Josephine," Raphael commanded, his voice steady and completely commanding. "You are going to stay in the ICU with Wyatt. Dr. Vance will lock the reinforced doors from the inside. Do not open them for anyone except me or Gideon. Do you understand?"
"Raphael, don't go down there," she pleaded, tears slipping down her cheeks. "They came for me! Let me give them whatever documents they want!"
"No," Raphael said, his thumb brushing a tear from her cheek. "You and Wyatt are under my protection. I am ending this tonight."

He leaned down, pressing a hard, fierce kiss against her forehead—a silent promise that thrilled and terrified her all at once.
"Lock the doors, Doctor," Raphael ordered, turning away as he pulled his weapon.
