Chapter 5 - The Shadow of the Past

For the next three months, the Whitaker household was transformed. Lily’s health began to improve dramatically under the care of the top specialists Ethan had secured. Her cheeks regained their color, and she no longer looked like a fragile doll. She and Noah became inseparable, spending their afternoons playing in the sprawling backyard or doing homework together at the kitchen island.
Grace looked healthier too. She had moved out of the Waukegan motel and into a small, bright townhome in Lake Forest, only ten minutes from the estate. She still worked as Ethan’s housekeeper, but the dynamic had shifted. She was no longer a shadow; she was a presence. They shared morning coffee together, discussing the children, their days, and slowly, their pasts.
Ethan found himself looking forward to coming home. The house no longer felt like a cold, empty showroom. It was filled with the smell of Grace’s cooking, the sound of children’s laughter, and a warmth he hadn't felt in years.
But the peace was not to last.
One Tuesday afternoon, Ethan was in the middle of a board meeting when his phone buzzed. It was an unknown number from eastern Kentucky.
He excused himself and took the call in the hallway.
"Ethan Whitaker?" a gruff, southern voice asked.
"Yes. Who is this?"
"My name is Detective Miller, with the Harlan County Sheriff's Department. We’ve been tracking some financial activity linked to an old fraud case involving a Thomas Sterling. It seems a shell company registered under his name just made a query regarding Grace Sterling’s—now Grace Miller’s—current employment and residential records in Illinois."
Ethan’s grip on the phone tightened. "What does that mean?"
"It means Thomas Sterling is back in the country," the detective said. "And he’s looking for his ex-wife. He left a lot of angry people behind when he fled, Mr. Whitaker. If he’s looking for Grace, it’s because he thinks she has access to some of the money he hid before the collapse. You need to be careful. Sterling is a desperate man."
Ethan felt a chill run down his spine. He looked through the glass window at his busy employees, but his mind was miles away, back in the warm kitchen where Grace and the children were waiting.
"Thank you, Detective," Ethan said. "Keep me updated."

He hung up the phone and dialed his security team. "I need two plainclothes security officers stationed at my estate starting immediately. No one goes in or out without my personal authorization."
The past was catching up, and this time, Ethan was determined to protect the family he had fought so hard to rebuild.
