Chapter 9 - The House of Joy

The winter passed, and spring arrived in Lake Forest with a burst of bright green leaves and blooming tulips.

The Whitaker estate was no longer quiet. The sounds of children playing, dogs barking, and music playing filled every room.

The brown canvas tote still sat by the back door, but it was no longer a symbol of hunger or secrets. It was now used to carry beach towels, picnic blankets, and toys for Noah and Lily’s weekend trips to the lake.

One sunny Saturday afternoon, Ethan was standing in the kitchen, watching Grace prepare lunch. She was wearing a beautiful green dress, her hair flowing freely, a bright, happy laugh escaping her lips as Noah tried to steal a strawberry from her cutting board.

Ethan walked up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist and resting his chin on her shoulder.

"You look beautiful today," he whispered.

"I feel beautiful," she said, turning her head to kiss his cheek. "I feel... happy, Ethan. For the first time in my life, I'm not waiting for the other shoe to drop."

"The only thing dropping in this house is Legos," Ethan laughed, gesturing to Noah, who was currently building a giant tower on the kitchen floor.

Lily ran into the kitchen, her cheeks rosy and healthy. "Dad! Look what I drew!"

She handed Ethan a drawing. It was a picture of a large, beautiful house with four people standing in front of it, holding hands. Above the house, she had written in colorful, uneven letters: OUR FAMILY.

Ethan felt a lump in his throat. He looked at Grace, whose eyes were filled with happy tears.

"It's perfect, Lily," Ethan said, pulling her into a warm hug. "It’s the best drawing I’ve ever seen."
