Chapter 7 - Healing the Wounds

The aftermath of Thomas’s arrival left the house in a tense, quiet state. The children had been put to bed, though both Noah and Lily had sensed the danger, clinging to Grace before finally falling asleep.

Ethan found Grace sitting on the back porch, watching the rain drip from the roof. She was wrapped in a thick wool blanket, her hands clutching a mug of warm tea that had long since gone cold.

He sat down on the bench beside her, leaving a respectful distance.

"Are you all right?" he asked gently.

"I thought I was free of him," she whispered, her eyes staring into the dark garden. "For five years, I’ve been running. Changing my name, moving from town to town, trying to build a life where he couldn't find us. I thought... I thought we were safe here."

"You are safe here, Grace," Ethan said, reaching out to place his hand over hers. Her skin was freezing. "I won't let him, or anyone else, hurt you or Lily. I have the best lawyers in the state. We’ll file for a permanent restraining order, and we’ll make sure his criminal charges in Kentucky keep him behind bars for a very long time."

Grace turned her head to look at him. In the soft light of the porch lamp, her eyes were luminous with tears.

"Why are you doing all of this for us, Ethan? It’s too much. I'm just your cleaning lady."

"You were never just my cleaning lady, Grace," Ethan said, his voice deep and filled with a sincerity that made her breath hitch. He turned his body to face her fully, his hand gently squeezing hers. "You are the woman who brought my son back to life. You are the woman who made me realize what is actually important in this world. I don't care about the houses, the money, or the business. I care about you. I care about Lily. I want us to be a family."

Grace stared at him, her heart pounding. For years, she had been a survivor, fighting every single day just to keep her head above water. She had forgotten what it felt like to be cared for, to be protected, to be loved.

"Ethan..." she whispered.

He leaned in slowly, giving her ample time to pull away. She didn't.

When his lips met hers, it was a gentle, reassuring kiss, filled with the promise of a future that she had never dared to dream of. It was a promise of safety, of love, and of a home that was finally real.
