Chapter 5 - THE DARK HOUSE SECRETS

While the police processed Marissa’s formal confession, I returned home with a heavy heart. The truth was finally coming out, but the shadows in my home ran deeper than I had imagined.
That evening, Rosa approached me in the kitchen while the boys were in the living room drawing pictures.
"Mr. Carter," she said softly, holding a small silver key. "When I was cleaning the basement storage room last week—the room behind the old cellar—I found this under the floorboards near the furnace. I didn't know what it belonged to until today."
I took the key. It was an old-fashioned skeleton key, tarnished with age.
"Where exactly did you find it?" I asked.
"In the old wine cellar," Rosa explained. "There is a wooden panel near the back wall that didn't sit right. When I moved it to dust, I saw a small lockbox tucked into the masonry."
Accompanied by Arthur, I descended the stairs into the stone basement. The air was cool and smelled of damp earth. We walked past the boys' brightly colored playroom—where Marissa had terrorized them—and entered the dark, neglected wine cellar at the back of the house.
Arthur pulled away a heavy oak rack, revealing a small, rusted iron door built into the foundation wall.
I inserted the skeleton key. With a sharp click, the lock gave way.
Inside the small recess was a metal deed box marked with Valerie’s handwriting: FOR CARTER - IF I DON'T MAKE IT HOME.
My heart hammered against my ribs. Valerie had known.
I pulled the box out and opened it on the concrete floor. Inside was a bound journal, a USB drive, and several printed internal documents from Carter Global.
I opened the journal to the last entry, dated the day before her death.
“Carter is working so hard, but he doesn't see what's happening around him,” Valerie had written in her elegant script. “Julian Vance has compromised our board. My sister Marissa has been feeding him my personal schedules. Today, I found proof that Julian is using our shipping vessels to traffic illegal goods across the border. If I go to the police, Julian threatened to hurt Ethan and Noah. I hid this here because I don't know who to trust anymore. Carter, if you are reading this, I am so sorry I couldn't protect our boys. Please, stop working. Look at them. Love them.”
Tears streamed down my face, hot and silent, dropping onto the yellowed pages of my late wife’s handwriting. For two years, I thought I was honoring her memory by working myself to death. In reality, I had been running away from the very duty she had died trying to fulfill: protecting our sons.
"Mr. Carter," Arthur said quietly, placing a firm hand on my shoulder. "This evidence doesn't just destroy Julian Vance legally. It gives us every motive, every line of communication, and every corporate treason charge we need to ruin him completely."

I wiped my eyes, my chest heaving, and stood up with the box held tightly in my arms.
"Call the FBI," I said, my voice hardening like steel. "We’re not just defending anymore. We’re taking everything from him."
