Chapter 10 - A NEW SUNRISE

Two years later.

The sun was setting over the Westchester hills, casting a brilliant golden glow over the manicured lawn of the Carter estate.

Laughter and music drifted through the open French doors of the main house. Dozens of guests—friends, family, neighbors, and Detective Miller—were gathered on the sprawling patio for Ethan and Noah’s eighth birthday party.

A large grand piano sat under the outdoor pavilion.

Ethan stood beside it with his child-sized acoustic guitar, while Noah sat proudly behind a small drum kit. They played a bright, upbeat melody—a song they had composed themselves over the summer.

The crowd erupted in warm applause as the boys finished their performance with a dramatic flourish.

"Thank you, everyone!" Noah shouted into a microphone, bowing dramatically. "Now please eat more cake!"

The guests laughed and clapped. I stood near the edge of the pavilion, a glass of champagne in hand, watching my sons with a heart so full of love it felt like it might burst.

Rosa walked up beside me, wearing a gorgeous yellow floral dress that caught the golden evening light. She handed me a small slice of chocolate cake.

"They played brilliantly tonight, didn't they?" she asked softly.

"They did," I replied, setting the cake down and looking at her. "Because they have the best teacher in the world."

Over the past two years, Rosa had become far more than an estate manager. She was the heart of our household. She was the anchor that kept us grounded, the warmth that made our house a true home, and my closest companion.

"I was thinking about Valerie today," I admitted gently, looking out at the gardens. "I think she’d be really happy seeing them like this."

"She is happy, Carter," Rosa said softly, placing a warm hand on my arm. "She’s watching them thrive."

I looked down at Rosa’s hand on my arm, then into her kind, brown eyes. The quiet understanding between us had grown into something deep, beautiful, and undeniable.

"Rosa," I said, my voice low and tender.

"Yes, Carter?"

"Thank you for coming into our lives," I said, taking her hand in mine, lacing my fingers with hers. "I don't think I ever told you... but the day I walked into that music room and heard you singing with my boys... that was the day my life restarted."

Rosa smiled, a soft blush gracing her cheeks. "It was the day mine restarted, too."

Across the lawn, Ethan and Noah spotted us holding hands. They looked at each other, shared a knowing smirk, and came running over, tackling both of us in a massive, chaotic group hug.

"Group hug!" Ethan cheered.

"Daddy, Rosa, come on! We're cutting the big cake now!" Noah yelled, pulling both of our hands toward the long dessert table.

I laughed out loud—a genuine, deep laugh that echoed across the lawn into the quiet evening air.

As I walked toward the brightly lit house with my two healthy, happy sons running ahead and Rosa walking by my side, I knew the darkness was officially gone. The scars of the past remained, but they were no longer painful. They were simply reminders of how far we had come, and how bright our future was going to be.
