Chapter 7 - THE CONFRONTATION

That evening, a fierce thunderstorm battered Westchester. Sheet rain slammed against the high stained-glass windows of my home, and thunder rumbled across the dark hills.

Inside, the house felt warm and safe. Rosa had prepared a comforting chicken soup, and the smell filled the kitchen. Ethan and Noah were sitting at the dining table with me, drawing pictures with colorful markers.

"Look, Daddy," Noah said, pointing his small finger at a drawing. It showed four people standing under a bright yellow sun: Ethan, Noah, me, and Rosa holding a tray of cookies.

I felt a lump in my throat. "It's beautiful, Noah. Absolutely beautiful."

Suddenly, the lights flickered and killed the room into darkness.

The gentle hum of the house generator failed to kick in. Down the hallway, an alarm beeped once before going dead silent.

"Arthur?" I called out, standing up immediately, pushing the boys behind me.

No answer came over the house intercom.

Outside, the heavy wooden double doors of the main entrance shattered open with a violent bang.

"Carter!" a voice roared through the dark foyer, echoing over the sound of pouring rain outside.

It was Julian Vance.

Driven to absolute desperation by the FBI warrants and the collapse of his empire, Julian had used his remaining armed mercenaries to cut the power lines and breach the perimeter.

"Rosa, take the boys into the panic room upstairs!" I yelled, reaching into my desk drawer for the heavy brass statuette I kept as a paperweight.

Rosa didn't hesitate. She grabbed Ethan and Noah, pulling them swiftly toward the service stairs behind the kitchen.

Julian Vance stepped into the grand living room, illuminated only by the flashes of lightning outside. He was wet from the rain, holding a silenced pistol, his eyes crazed and frantic. Behind him stood two heavy-set thugs.

"You ruined me, Carter!" Vance hissed, his voice trembling with unhinged rage. "Thirty years of building my empire, gone in twenty-four hours because of you and your dead wife's ghost!"

"It's over, Vance," I said, standing my ground between him and the stairs. "The FBI has your bank records, your mechanics, and Harrison's confession. You have nowhere left to run."

"I don't need to run," Vance sneered, raising the gun directly at my chest. "I just need to make sure you don't live to see me burn."

BANG!

A gunshot echoed through the house, but it didn't come from Vance’s weapon.

Vance gasped, dropping his gun as a taser dart struck his neck, sending high-voltage electricity surging through his body. He collapsed onto the marble floor, twitching violently.

From the darkness of the hallway, Arthur Vance stepped out, holding a tactical taser, accompanied by three police officers with guns raised.

"Drop your weapons!" Miller yelled, rushing in with his team, surrounding Julian’s two thugs, who immediately threw their hands in the air.

"We caught them cutting the main power gate, Mr. Carter," Arthur said, stepping over Julian’s groaning form on the floor. "You okay, sir?"

I let out a long, shuddering breath, dropping the heavy statuette onto the rug.

"I am now," I said.
