Chapter 6 - BETRAYAL FROM WITHIN

The fallout from Valerie’s hidden journal was swift, but Julian Vance was not a man to go down quietly. He had deep political connections and millions of dollars at his disposal.
The next morning, an emergency board meeting was called at Carter Global headquarters in Manhattan.
I walked into the top-floor glass boardroom wearing a dark suit, my head held high for the first time in two years. Sitting at the head of the table was my vice chairman, Harrison Croft—a man I had trusted as a mentor for over a decade.
"Carter," Harrison said, his tone dripping with fake sympathy as the other board members looked on nervously. "We heard about the terrible situation with your sister-in-law. It's tragic. But given the personal scandal and your... emotional instability over the past two years, the board is considering stepping in to manage executive operations."
I didn't sit down. I tossed Valerie’s financial audit documents directly onto the center of the glass table.
"You don't need to pretend anymore, Harrison," I said calmly.
Harrison’s smile faltered. "What is the meaning of this?"
"That document shows three separate offshore accounts transferring funds from Vance Corporate Logistics into your private account in the Cayman Islands," I revealed, staring him dead in the eye. "You were Julian Vance’s insider on my board. You helped him attempt a hostile takeover, and you helped cover up the compliance irregularities Valerie discovered before she died."
The room erupted into gasps. Board members leaned forward, frantically grabbing the pages.
"This is slander!" Harrison shouted, standing up, his face flushing red. "Security, remove him!"
The boardroom doors opened, but it wasn't corporate security who stepped inside.
It was FBI Special Agent Mark Ramsey, followed by four armed federal officers.
"Harrison Croft," Agent Ramsey announced, pulling out a warrant. "You are under arrest for corporate espionage, wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit murder in connection with the death of Valerie Carter."
Harrison dropped into his chair, his face drained of all color. As the federal agents cuffed him and led him out past his stunned colleagues, I turned to the remaining board members.
"Effective immediately," I declared, "I am restructuring the board. I am liquidating our compromised assets and using the funds to establish the Valerie Carter Foundation for Children's Safety."

I walked out of the skyscraper, ignoring the flashing cameras of the media gathered outside. I didn't care about the stock price. I didn't care about the news headlines.
I got into my car and drove straight home to Westchester. I had a promise to keep to my sons.
