Chapter 4 - The Unraveling Thread

The news of Harland’s sudden detention at the Vance Estate did not stay contained within the estate walls for long.
By nine o'clock the following morning, the forensic audit had uncovered something far more sinister than petty domestic wage theft. Harland hadn't just been stealing from the housekeepers; he had been passing private internal estate logs, security schematics, and guest lists to an outside corporate rival.
I sat in my grand library on the second floor, reviewing the encrypted email threads my IT security team had pulled from Harland’s private drive.
Standing across from my desk was Marcus Vance—my younger half-brother.
Marcus was twenty-eight, impeccably groomed, wearing a tailored three-piece suit. He was my father’s son from his second, wealthy marriage—a man raised in soft silk, private schools, and endless privilege, who had never worked a day of hard labor in his life. He held a minority seat on the Vance Global board and had spent the last three years subtly trying to challenge my authority as Chairman.
"Luca, this is preposterous," Marcus said, pacing across the room with a glass of scotch in his hand. "You've detained our estate manager under armed guard in his office! Do you have any idea how bad this looks? If the board hears that you're holding staff hostage over a domestic accounting discrepancy, they will call for an emergency competency hearing!"
I didn't look up from the laptop screen. "Harland wasn't just skimming paychecks, Marcus. He was selling my private travel routes to the Moretti Group."
Marcus paused mid-step, his glass hovering near his lips. A subtle, almost imperceptible twitch passed over his jaw. "The... the Moretti Group? That’s absurd. Why would Harland risk his career for Moretti?"
"That’s what I’m going to ask him," I said, finally raising my eyes to meet my brother's. "And do you know what else is interesting, Marcus?"
Marcus narrowed his eyes. "What?"
"The offshore shell company that was receiving Harland’s kickbacks from the Moretti leaks is registered under an entity called Vanguard Management," I said smoothly, leaning back in my heavy leather chair. "And three years ago, when father died, you asked me to approve a two-million-dollar corporate grant to a subsidiary with that exact same name."
Marcus’s face turned visibly pale. He swallowed hard, adjusting his diamond cufflinks. "Lots of shell companies use generic names, Luca. You can't possibly be implying that I—"
"I’m not implying anything yet, brother," I said, my voice dropping into a deadly, quiet register. "I am simply connecting threads. Harland treated the workers in this house like cattle because he believed he had a powerful backer who would protect him if things went wrong. He thought he was untouchable."
I stood up, towering over Marcus.
"I gave you a seat at my table because you carry my father's blood," I continued, stepping around the desk until I was inches from him. "But if I find out that you put a sick woman and a three-year-old child through hell just to build a leverage file against me... I will strip you of every stock option, every bank account, and every luxury you possess."
Marcus stared at me, his eyes wide with a mixture of anger and genuine fear. "You care more about a maid and her bastard child than your own brother!"
"That maid has more honor in her left finger than you have in your entire body," I spat coldly. "Get out of my sight."

Marcus slammed his scotch glass onto the marble side table and stormed out of the library, the heavy oak doors slamming shut behind him.
I stood alone in the quiet room, staring at the rain outside. The war for Vance Global was no longer just about corporate control. It was personal. And for the first time in my life, I had something inside this house worth fighting for.
