Chapter 8 - The Clear Sky

By midnight, the grand mansion was quiet once more.
The journalists had fled, the investors had departed in hushed shock, and the federal agents had cleared out after confiscating Marcus’s private files.
I sat in my library, sipping a glass of aged bourbon, looking out at the peaceful winter garden below. The weight that had rested on my shoulders for thirty years—the dark, suffocating ghost of my past—finally felt light.
A soft knock sounded at the open library door.
I turned to see Sarah standing in the doorway, still wearing her navy dress. She looked beautiful, radiant, and entirely transformed from the terrified woman I had found in that tiny staff room a week ago.
"Nora is fast asleep," Sarah said softly, walking into the room. "She insisted on putting her new painting under her pillow."
I smiled, setting my glass down. "She’s a remarkable little girl, Sarah."
Sarah walked over to the desk, standing beside my chair. She looked at me with deep, quiet emotion. "You planned all of this, didn't you? The federal investigation, your aunt... you knew Marcus was going to strike tonight."
"I knew Marcus was desperate," I admitted quietly. "Men like him always strike when they think their victim is weak. He thought my concern for you and Nora was a flaw. He didn't realize it was the only thing that made me invincible."
Sarah’s breath caught in her throat. She looked down at me, her brown eyes shining with unshed tears.
"Luca..." she whispered softly. "What happens now?"
I stood up from my chair, stepping close to her until the space between us disappeared. I reached out, gently cupping her warm cheek with my hand. Sarah leaned into my touch, closing her eyes as a soft sigh escaped her lips.
"Now," I murmured, my thumb gently tracing her cheekbone, "no one in this house will ever be afraid again. You and Nora are stayinig here. Not as employees. Not as guests. But as my family."
Sarah opened her eyes, looking into mine with complete trust and deep affection. "Family?"
"If you'll have me," I whispered softly.
May you like
Sarah smiled—a bright, beautiful smile that illuminated the entire room. She raised her hands, wrapping them around my neck, and pulled me down into a soft, tender kiss.
I wrapped my arms securely around her waist, holding her close against my chest, feeling the warmth of her life, her heart, and her love filling every empty corner of my soul.
