Chapter 6 - The Trap Sprung

The quiet peace of the estate was shattered forty-eight hours later.

It was Friday evening—the night of the annual Vance Global Board Gala. The grand ballroom on the main floor of the mansion was filled with two hundred of New York’s most powerful figures: corporate titans, politicians, foreign investors, and journalists.

I stood near the grand staircase wearing a tailored tuxedo, holding a glass of mineral water, exchanging pleasantries with board members. Yet my mind kept drifting back to the sunroom suite in the east wing, where Sarah and Nora were quietly eating dinner.

At eight o'clock, Marcus walked onto the raised orchestra platform, holding a microphone.

"Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed members of the board," Marcus’s voice echoed loudly through the sound system, cutting through the classical violin music. "May I have your attention, please?"

The ballroom quieted down. Guests turned their attention toward the stage.

I narrowed my eyes, taking a slow step forward. Marcus had not been scheduled to address the gala.

"Tonight, we celebrate another profitable year for Vance Global," Marcus continued, a triumphant, malicious smirk playing on his lips. "Under the leadership of my brother, Luca Vance, our firm has reached unprecedented heights. However... true leadership requires absolute integrity, both in the boardroom and within one’s private residence."

A murmur of confusion ran through the crowd.

"Over the past seventy-two hours," Marcus declared loudly, pointing a finger directly at me, "my brother has abused his corporate authority. He illegally detained our long-standing estate manager, Arthur Harland, against his will. And why? To cover up an improper, unprofessional relationship with a low-level housemaid whom he has lavished with corporate funds and luxury guest suites!"

Gasps erupted across the ballroom. Flashbulbs began to go off as several undercover journalists Marcus had brought in raised their cameras.

"I have filed an emergency motion with the board," Marcus announced, pulling a document from his jacket. "To relieve Luca Vance of his position as Chairman due to gross moral turpitude, corporate embezzlement, and unlawful confinement!"

Before the crowd could process his words, the heavy side doors of the ballroom opened.

Arthur Harland—who had been quietly released by federal authorities two hours earlier under an immunity agreement—walked into the ballroom, flanked by two high-profile corporate attorneys.

"It's true!" Harland called out dramatically to the room. "Luca Vance threatened my life when I caught him misappropriating estate assets for his mistress! He forced me into isolation to silence me!"

The ballroom erupted into absolute chaos. Board members began shouting, cameras flashed relentlessly, and Marcus stood on the stage looking at me with pure, unadulterated triumph.

They believed they had executed a perfect media trap. They believed that by publicly embarrassing me in front of the entire elite establishment, I would resign to avoid a prolonged scandal.

They didn't know who they were dealing with.

I didn't panic. I didn't raise my voice. I set my glass down on a passing waiter’s tray, smoothed my lapels, and walked slowly toward the stage.
