Chapter 5 - The Armory and the Map

The safehouse interior was an architectural masterpiece of exposed stone, dark timber, and minimalist modern luxury—completely at odds with the violent underworld business conducted within its walls.
Once Barnaby had been safely released from his carrier to explore a sunlit kitchen island with a bowl of fresh water, Dante led Lily down a heavy steel-reinforced corridor in the basement.
The door unlocked with a digital keypad and a biometric retinal scan. Inside was an armory that would have made a private military contractor drool. Racks of matte-black assault rifles, submachine guns, and neatly organized pistol cases lined the walls under sterile LED lighting. A massive tactical map of the city was pinned to a central corkboard, marked with red pushpins, string, and surveillance photographs.
Lily walked slowly past the weapon racks, her fingers hovering inches from the cold steel of a compact 9mm Beretta.
"You said you'd teach me," Lily reminded him, not looking away from the pistols.
Dante stepped up beside her, unlocking a glass case and lifting the Beretta out with practiced ease. He checked the chamber, ensuring it was cleared, before holding it out handle-first.
"Hold your breath," Dante instructed, guiding her hands to take the grip. "Align the sights. Don't fight the kick; ride it."
They stood close—so close Lily could feel the heat radiating from his chest through his tailored shirt. Her heart skipped a beat, not from fear this time, but from an entirely unfamiliar surge of awareness. She forced her focus down to the weapon, wrapping her fingers around the grip, feeling the heavy, reassuring weight of power in her palm. For the first time in years, she wasn't a victim holding a weapon; she was a survivor taking aim.
"Show me the map," Lily said, lowering the pistol safely onto the workbench.
Dante led her to the central corkboard. He tapped a cluster of red pins clustered around an abandoned meatpacking plant on the southern edge of the docks.
"This is Rossi’s primary stronghold since his escape from federal custody," Dante explained, tracing a red string from the packing plant to a high-rise downtown. "He’s using it to funnel contraband and house his remaining loyalists. Intelligence says he’s planning a major shipment this Friday night. That’s our window."
Lily leaned in close, studying the blueprints pinned beside the photographs. Her architect’s eye—honed before her life was torn apart—instantly went to work, analyzing structural vulnerabilities, HVAC shafts, load-bearing walls, and blind spots in the security grid.
"His primary security is concentrated around the loading bays," Lily pointed out, tapping a blue marker against the diagram. "But look at the drainage system running beneath the cooling facility. It connects directly to the municipal storm drains three blocks away. Back when I was... when I was forced to audit his logistics accounts, I saw the architectural modifications his engineers made. It's a blind spot."

Dante stared at her, genuine astonishment flickering across his slate eyes. "You memorized his logistics architecture?"
"When you live in a cage, you study every bar," Lily said simply, her voice cold as ice. "I know every weakness he has, Dante. Because I helped him build some of them before I knew what monster he was."
