Chapter 7 - The Breach

The rain had stopped by midnight, leaving the city streets slick and glistening under sodium-orange streetlamps.

The van carrying Dante, Lily, and four of his elite operatives slipped silently into the industrial district near the southern docks. The abandoned meatpacking plant loomed against the dark sky like a concrete monolith, its windows dark and forbidding.

Dante checked the magazine of his suppressed submachine gun, glancing sideways at Lily. She sat in the back of the van, wearing matte-black tactical gear, her hair tied back in a tight braid, the Beretta holstered securely at her hip. The canvas bag was gone; in its place was a woman who had reclaimed her life with iron and blood.

"Remember the drainage infiltration route," Dante instructed quietly, his eyes locking onto hers. "Once inside, secure the communications hub. I’ll lead the breach through the loading bay."

"Be careful, Dante," Lily said, her voice steady. "He's more desperate than you think."

"So am I," Dante replied with a grim smile.

The team moved with ghostly silence out of the van and toward the rear alleyway of the packing plant. Lily led the way to the hidden storm drain access grate she had memorized from architectural files. With a specialized crowbar provided by Dante’s team, the rusted iron grate popped open with barely a whisper of sound.

One by one, they slipped into the subterranean darkness below.

The tunnels smelled of stagnant water and rust, echoing with the distant dripping of condensation. Lily navigated the labyrinthine conduits with absolute confidence, her flashlight cutting a narrow beam through the gloom until they reached the interior maintenance ladder leading directly up into the sub-basement of the plant.

Climbing the rungs, Lily pushed open a heavy metal ventilation hatch.

She peered out into a brightly lit corridor lined with concrete pillars. Two of Rossi’s guards stood smoking near a set of double doors fifty feet down the hall, their assault rifles slung casually over their shoulders.

Lily signaled down to the operatives behind her. In a synchronized, lightning-fast motion, two silenced shots rang out with a soft thip-thip. The guards collapsed instantly without a sound, caught by Dante’s men before they hit the floor.

They had breached the inner sanctum.
