Chapter 9 - Ashes to Blooms

Three weeks later, the morning sun poured through the wide glass windows of a brand-new storefront on a quiet, tree-lined corner downtown.
The sign hanging above the double doors read: VALERIE’S BOTANICA & FLORAL DESIGN.
Inside, the air was thick with the sweet, intoxicating scent of fresh lavender, eucalyptus, and white peonies. Shelves made of reclaimed dark timber lined the walls, stacked with ceramic pots, gardening tools, and delicate glass vases.
Lily stood behind the rustic wooden counter, wearing a comfortable denim apron over a soft linen shirt, arranging a cluster of deep red roses into a bouquet. Her movements were fluid, unhurried, and entirely at peace. On her left wrist, the lavender sleeve of her shirt was rolled up slightly—she no longer felt the need to hide her scars from the world. They were just part of her architecture now. Proof that she had survived the collapse.
The brass door chime rang softly.
Lily looked up, expecting a morning customer. Instead, Dante walked in, carrying a fresh batch of shipping invoices from the harbor authority, his dark suit jacket draped over one arm.
"Health inspector just cleared the rear storage room," Dante said, offering a faint, easy smile as he set the clipboard down on the counter. "Barnaby has inspected the windowsill and given it his official approval."
"That high praise," Lily laughed, setting down her shears and walking around the counter to stand in front of him.
Dante reached out, his fingers gently brushing against her wrist, tracing the unblemished skin just above where her scars lay. The phantom tremors were entirely gone.
"Federal prosecutors finished locking down Rossi’s remaining assets this morning," Dante told her softly, his slate eyes warm with an emotion he reserved only for her. "He’s doing life without parole in a maximum-security federal penitentiary three states away. He'll never see the outside of a cell again."
Lily felt a profound, final weight lift from her shoulders. The ghost was exorcised. The nightmare was over.
"Good," Lily whispered. She reached up, looping her arms loosely around his neck. "Because I'm entirely too busy running a successful business to worry about ghosts anymore."

Dante wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest, burying his face in her hair as the scent of fresh roses enveloped them both.
"Good," Dante murmured against her ear. "Because I'm planning on sticking around for a very long time."
