Chapter 2: The Rising Phoenix

The next morning, I woke up to the smell of fresh coffee. I dressed in the elegant cream-colored pantsuit Daniel's assistant had provided. When I looked in the mirror, the swollen eyes and smudged mascara were gone. For the first time in years, I saw a spark of determination in my own eyes.

When I arrived at Hayes Architecture, the atmosphere was buzzing. I walked toward the main conference room, clutching my recovered portfolio. Before I could reach the door, a familiar, aggressive grip caught my elbow.

I spun around. It was Tyler. He had somehow gotten past the front desk, wearing a wrinkled shirt, his face flushed with anger.

"Emily! Thank God," he whispered loudly, trying to pull me toward the elevators. "You need to come home right now. You made a scene last night. I was just stressed because of work, okay? You know I love you. Let's forget about that old man Hayes and go home."

I looked at his hand on my arm. The old Emily would have trembled. But the memory of my mother's cracked frame gave me a sudden, fierce rush of courage. I wrenched my arm out of his grip.

"Don't touch me, Tyler," I said, my voice echoing clearly across the open office floor. Several coworkers turned to look. "We are over. There is no 'home' to go back to."

"Are you crazy?" Tyler sneered, his true colors showing as his temper flared. "You're a junior designer, Emily! You're nothing without me! You think your little boss is going to protect you forever? He's just using you!"

"Is there a problem here?"

Daniel’s voice cut through the room like a blade. He stepped out of the conference room, flanked by two large security guards. His presence was imposing, radiating an undeniable power that made Tyler instantly step back.

"Mr. Hayes," Tyler stammered, trying to regain his footing. "This is my girlfriend. She's having an emotional episode—"

"She is an employee of this firm, and she has explicitly asked you to leave," Daniel said, his voice deadly calm. "Furthermore, Mr. Vance, I have spent the morning reviewing the background checks for our suppliers. It appears your logistics company has been overcharging Hayes Architecture for materials for the past six months. That is corporate fraud."

Tyler’s face went pale. "What? That's a lie!"

"My legal team doesn't lie," Daniel replied coldly. "Security, escort this man off the premises. If he ever sets foot in this building, or comes within a hundred yards of Ms. Emily, press charges immediately."

As the security guards dragged a screaming, humiliated Tyler out of the office, I looked at Daniel. He turned to me, his expression instantly softening.

"Are you ready for the presentation, Emily?" he asked gently.

I took a deep breath, straightened my blazer, and smiled. "Yes, Daniel. I am."
