Chapter 3: Shifting Foundations

Over the next three months, my life transformed in ways I never thought possible. With Tyler out of the picture and a restraining order firmly in place, I poured all my energy into my passion. Daniel promoted me to Lead Designer for the Riverview Waterfront Project—the biggest contract our firm had ever taken on.
Working closely with Daniel meant spending long evenings together. I learned that beneath his stern, professional exterior lay a deeply compassionate man. He was a visionary who cared about people, not just profits. And slowly, the professional boundaries between us began to blur into something much deeper.
One rainy Friday evening, we were the last two left in the design studio, surrounded by blueprints and miniature architectural models.
"Your revisions on the community center are brilliant, Emily," Daniel said, leaning over my shoulder to look at the sketches. His warmth was intoxicating, making my pulse quicken. "You have a rare gift for creating places that feel like home."
"I think I finally understand what 'home' means," I said softly, looking up at him. "It's not a physical building. It's where you feel safe. You gave me that, Daniel."
Daniel looked at me, his dark eyes intense and full of an emotion he had been suppressing for months. He reached out, his thumb gently tracing my jawline. "I didn't give you anything, Emily. You found your own strength. I just held the umbrella while you did it."
He leaned in, his breath warm against my lips. Just as his mouth was about to touch mine, the silence of the office was shattered by a loud, crashing sound from the lobby.
The glass doors of the studio shook as a wild, disheveled figure burst in. It was Tyler. He looked unhinged, his eyes bloodshot, holding a heavy metal crowbar in his hand.

"Emily!" Tyler screamed, his face twisted in madness. "You ruined my life! My company went bankrupt because of Hayes! If I can't have you, no one will!"
He lunged forward, raising the crowbar straight toward me.
