Chapter 5: Shadows into Light

The next few weeks were a test of endurance. Daniel underwent major surgery to repair his shattered shoulder. I stayed by his hospital bedside every single night, balancing my duties as Lead Designer for the Riverview project with caring for the man who had risked his life for me.
Tyler’s trial was swift. With the office security footage, his history of harassment, and the physical evidence of the attack, he was sentenced to fifteen years in a maximum-security prison without the possibility of parole. He was officially gone, a dark chapter permanently closed.
On the day Daniel was discharged from the hospital, his arm still in a sleek black sling, I drove him back to his personal estate—a beautiful, modern home nestled in the quiet hills overlooking the city.
"It feels good to be home," Daniel sighed, sitting on his large plush sofa. He looked at me, his eyes full of tenderness. "But it only feels like home because you're here, Emily."
I walked over, carefully sitting beside him, mindful of his injured shoulder. "The Riverview project approved the final designs today, Daniel. The board loved it. We start construction next month."
"I knew you could do it," he said softly. He reached out with his left hand, gently taking mine. "Emily, the night I found you in the rain, you thought you were worthless because someone treated you like trash. But from the moment I met you, I saw a diamond. I want to build a real life with you. Not as your boss, not as your savior, but as your partner. Your equal."
He pulled a small velvet box from his pocket with his left hand, opening it to reveal a stunning, flawless emerald ring surrounded by delicate diamonds.

"Emily Vance, will you marry me?"
My breath hitched, and the happiest tears of my life spilled over my eyes. "Yes, Daniel. A thousand times, yes."
