Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Estate

By 3:00 a.m., the Bolaro mansion was under total lockdown. The iron perimeter gates were locked with heavy chains, the security cameras were set to record on maximum resolution, and the fourteen house staff members—from the head chef to the groundskeepers—had been assembled in the grand ballroom under the watchful eye of Lorenzo’s inner guard.
Maya stood in the nursery doorway, watching the rain beat violently against the bulletproof glass windows. Nico was finally fast asleep in his crib, his breathing smooth, rhythmic, and unburdened. The dangerous fever had broken entirely.
Lorenzo walked into the room, holding two crystal glasses filled with amber liquid. He offered one to Maya.
"I don't drink on duty," Maya said politely.
"It’s twenty-year-old scotch, not poison," Lorenzo said, setting the glass on the table near her. He took a slow sip from his own. "You’re an unusual woman, Nurse Ellis. Most people in Chicago run as fast as they can when my name is mentioned. You walked into my home, called my doctor a liar, and dismantled a murder plot in under an hour."
"I don't care about your name, Mr. Bolaro," Maya said, looking him dead in the eye. "I care about my patient. In my world, children don't pay for the sins of their fathers."
Lorenzo let out a quiet, appreciative grunt. "A sharp tongue. My wife had one of those. She used to tell me that power was just an illusion we build to distract ourselves from how fragile we really are." He looked down at sleeping Nico. "She was right. I command three hundred men, I control millions of dollars, and I couldn't even keep a bottle of milk safe for my own son."
"You couldn't have known," Maya said, her tone softening slightly as she saw the genuine, raw pain in the crime lord's eyes. "Whoever planned this relied on your trust. They used your love for your child against you. They wanted you so consumed by grief and panic that you wouldn't ask questions."
"Which brings us back to the cap," Lorenzo said, pulling a tablet from his pocket. "My security team searched every square inch of the kitchen and the nursery sterilizer. We found three more altered caps hidden in the back of the pantry storage bin, pre-loaded with the same toxin."
"That means the culprit has regular access to the pantry," Maya noted. "Who prepares the bottles?"
"Clara does the night feedings," Lorenzo replied. "The day nanny, Elena, does the morning ones. The kitchen staff washes them."
"What about family?" Maya asked tentatively. "Who else comes in and out of this nursery?"
Lorenzo’s eyes darkened slightly. "My brother, Julian. My cousin, Dominic. And my late wife’s sister, Sofia. They all have keys to the house. They all love Nico. Or so I thought."
"If Nico were to... pass away," Maya said, choosing her words with extreme care, "who stands to gain? Financially, or within your organization?"
Lorenzo took a long drink from his glass, staring out at the storm outside. "The Bolaro syndicate isn't a corporation, Maya. It’s a blood dynasty. According to my father’s will, control of our family’s assets, the real estate holdings, and the primary voting shares in our legitimate shipping lines pass down through the direct male line. When my wife died, Nico became the sole legal heir to fifty-one percent of the empire."
"And if Nico dies without an heir?"
"Then the estate is split," Lorenzo said, his voice dropping into a dangerous whisper. "Forty percent goes to my brother Julian. Thirty percent goes to Dominic. The rest goes to a family trust managed by Sofia."
Maya felt a cold shiver run down her spine. "So every single member of your family has a multi-million-dollar motive."
Before Lorenzo could respond, the heavy oak doors of the grand hall downstairs banged open. The sound of raised voices echoed up the curved marble staircase.
"What is the meaning of this?!" a sharp, feminine voice demanded from the foyer below. "Lorenzo! Why are your thugs keeping us locked inside the gates?!"
Lorenzo set his scotch glass down. "Speak of the devil," he murmured. "Stay here with Nico, Maya. Keep the door locked from the inside. Don't open it for anyone except me."
"Understood," Maya said.
Lorenzo pulled a sleek silver semi-automatic pistol from his shoulder holster, checked the chamber with a quiet clack, slipped it back into his jacket, and walked out into the corridor.

Maya locked the nursery door behind him, turning the heavy brass deadbolt. She sat down in the rocking chair beside Nico’s crib, her heart pounding. She looked at the tiny child sleeping peacefully under the wooden stars.
She was no longer just a nurse working an eight-hour night shift. She was locked inside a fortress with a syndicate boss, a poisoned baby, and a killer whose identity was hidden behind millions of dollars and family blood.
