Chapter 6 - The Architect's Footprint

By 5:00 a.m., the rain had softened into a persistent, gloomy drizzle over Chicago. Inside the Bolaro mansion's private command center—a room hidden behind a bookcase in Lorenzo’s study filled with security monitors and encrypted servers—the atmosphere was frantic.
Elena sat in a corner, wrapped in a blanket, weeping quietly while a security operative monitored her. Maya was sitting at a workstation, carefully bandaging her own finger, while Lorenzo and his chief cybersecurity analyst, a young man named Gabe, stared at three glaring monitors.
"I’ve got the tower dump," Gabe said, his fingers flying across the keyboard. "At 2:14 a.m., an encrypted SMS message was routed through a proxy server in Zurich, hit a cell tower two blocks from here, and landed on Elena’s burner phone."
"Can you trace the origin?" Lorenzo demanded, pacing behind the chair.
"The Zurich proxy is a dead end," Gabe replied. "But whoever sent it made one critical mistake. They used a localized cellular repeater to override the mansion's signal jammer. That repeater was activated from inside the property grounds."
Lorenzo stopped pacing. "Inside the grounds?"
"Yes," Gabe pointed to a map of the estate on the screen. "Right here. Near the old carriage house on the north edge of the property."
Maya looked up from her bandage. "The carriage house? Who has access to that?"
"It’s used for storage," Lorenzo said, his eyes narrowing. "And as a temporary office for family members when they conduct estate business."
"Julian," Lorenzo muttered under his breath.
"Wait, Boss," Gabe said, zooming in on a log of network traffic. "The message wasn't sent from Julian’s registered devices. The signal MAC address belongs to a custom-built, military-grade satellite comms unit. And that unit just pinged again three minutes ago."
"Where?"
"It’s moving," Gabe said, his voice rising in tension. "It’s moving along the eastern perimeter wall... toward the secondary service gate!"
Lorenzo pulled his gun. "Matteo! Take three men to the service gate! Block it off!"
"Wait!" Maya stood up, stepping toward Lorenzo. "If this 'Architect' realizes the gate is blocked, they might trigger whatever backup plan they have. Elena said they have her daughter. If they suspect they've been burned, that child is in immediate danger!"
Lorenzo looked at Maya, surprised by her tactical instinct. "What do you suggest?"
"Let them think the plan is still working," Maya said rapidly. "They sent Elena up to inject Nico. They’re waiting for news of his death. If we send a fake signal—a panic call from the estate to an ambulance line—the killer will think the job is done and head straight to their safe house or their hostage location."
Lorenzo stared at Maya for a long second, a slow, dangerous smile spreading across his lips.
"You have a dark mind for a nurse, Maya Ellis," Lorenzo said softly.
"I’ve worked in emergency rooms, Mr. Bolaro," Maya replied without expression. "I’ve seen how monsters think."
Lorenzo turned to Gabe. "Do it. Broadcast a fake emergency call from the house landline to the private ambulance dispatch. Make it sound like the baby went into cardiac arrest."
Gabe hit a sequence of keys. "Signal sent. Emergency call logged on the local band."
On the monitor tracking the satellite ping near the service gate, the red dot suddenly stopped moving. For ten agonizing seconds, it remained stationary. Then, it turned around and began moving rapidly toward the main road outside the gate.
"They took the bait," Gabe declared. "They’re heading south on Highway 41."
"Matteo, get the SUVs ready," Lorenzo ordered, his voice echoing with lethal intent. He looked over at Maya. "You’re coming with us."
May you like
"Me?" Maya blinked. "Why?"
"Because if we find that girl, she might need immediate medical attention," Lorenzo said, pulling an armored vest from a locker and tossing it to her. "Put that on. Tonight, you don't get to leave my side."
