Chapter 7 - The Safehouse Encounter

Three black SUVs tore through the misty streets of pre-dawn Chicago, running red lights and weaving through empty intersections with silent, deadly speed.

Maya sat in the backseat of the lead vehicle next to Lorenzo. She wore the heavy ballistic vest over her scrubs, feeling the surreal weight of the situation pressing down on her. Just twelve hours ago, she had been worrying about her rent and preparing for a routine night shift. Now, she was riding in an armed convoy with a mob boss to raid a hostage site.

"You aren't scared," Lorenzo observed, looking at her motionless hands in her lap.

"I am terrified," Maya corrected him gently. "But panic doesn't save lives. Focus does."

Lorenzo looked out the tinted window. "When this is over, Maya... whatever happens... you will be taken care of. You saved my line. The Bolaro family doesn't forget a debt like that."

"I don't want your money, Mr. Bolaro," Maya said. "I just want that baby to grow up safe. And I want this nightmare finished."

"It ends tonight," Lorenzo said coldly.

The SUV convoy pulled into an abandoned industrial park on the banks of the Chicago River. The satellite tracker led them to a dilapidated, two-story brick warehouse surrounded by rusting shipping containers.

A single silver sedan was parked near the loading dock, its engine ticking quietly as it cooled in the damp air.

"That's Dominic's car," Lorenzo said, his voice dropping into a register of murderous calm.

"Dominic?" Maya gasped. "Your CFO?"

"The quiet ones are always the most vicious," Lorenzo said, racking the slide of his pistol. "Matteo, breach the rear doors. No sirens. No lights. If anyone draws a weapon, kill them."

The men moved with terrifying efficiency. Within seconds, the heavy steel side door of the warehouse was picked, and Lorenzo’s team slipped inside like shadows. Maya stayed close behind Lorenzo, protected by Matteo and another armed guard.

The inside of the warehouse was cold, smelled of oil and damp concrete, and was illuminated only by a few hanging work lights. In the center of the room, tied to a wooden chair, was a young girl—no older than twelve—with duct tape over her mouth.

Standing over her, holding a laptop and a satellite phone, was Dominic.

Beside him stood two heavy-set men in leather jackets, carrying automatic weapons.

"Dominic," Lorenzo’s voice boomed through the cavernous space, echoing off the corrugated metal walls.

Dominic whipped around, his face turning pale as paper. The two mercenaries immediately raised their rifles, but before they could clear their holsters, twin suppressed gunshots rang out from Matteo’s team. Both mercenaries dropped to the concrete floor instantly.

Dominic dropped his laptop, stumbling backward, his hands held high in the air. "Lorenzo! Wait! Wait! It’s not what you think!"

Lorenzo stepped out of the shadows, his gun pointed straight at Dominic’s forehead. His eyes were completely lifeless, filled with a cold, absolute silence.

"You poisoned my son," Lorenzo said, taking slow, deliberate steps toward his cousin. "You used a innocent girl to blackmail a nurse. You hired Crane to sign a fake death certificate."

"It wasn't just me!" Dominic squealed, his voice cracking with sheer panic. "I didn't act alone! I was just the financier! I set up the offshore accounts!"

"Who else?" Lorenzo asked, stopping three feet away.

"If I tell you, you have to promise not to kill me!" Dominic begged, dropping to his knees. "Promise me, Lorenzo! Family mercy!"

Lorenzo stared down at him. "You lost your right to family mercy the second you touched my blood."

"It was Sofia!" Dominic blurted out, tears streaming down his face. "Sofia planned it all! She hated you! She blamed you for her sister’s death! She wanted to destroy you, take the trust money, and leave you with nothing!"

Maya felt her breath catch. Sofia—the grieving aunt, the sister of Lorenzo’s late wife—was the true mastermind.

Suddenly, a loud mechanical sound echoed from the upper catwalk of the warehouse.

May you like

"Too late, Dominic," a sharp, feminine voice called down from above.

Maya looked up. Standing on the iron catwalk twenty feet above them, holding a small remote detonator, was Sofia.
