Chapter 5 - The Infiltration

The terrace door swung open, letting in a gust of cold, rain-soaked wind and the heavy smell of ozone.

The intruder stepped inside, dripping water onto the pristine cream carpet. In their gloved hand, they held a small, silver syringe.

"Don't move," Maya said, her voice steady as steel. She stood between the intruder and the crib, raising the heavy brass candlestick like a club.

The intruder paused, pulling down the hood of the raincoat.

Maya’s breath caught in her throat.

It wasn't Julian, Dominic, or Sofia.

It was Elena—the quiet, middle-aged day nurse who had been caring for Nico during the afternoons for the past four months.

"Nurse Ellis," Elena said, her voice surprisingly calm, though her eyes were wild with desperation. "Put the candlestick down. You don't understand what’s happening here."

"I understand you're holding a needle in a sick baby's room at three in the morning," Maya said, taking a firmer stance. "I know about the bottle caps, Elena."

Elena let out a bitter, wet laugh. "The caps? You think I designed those? I'm a nurse, Maya, just like you! I don't know how to micro-engineer plastic! I was just paid to swap them out!"

"Who paid you?" Maya demanded. "Lorenzo is downstairs right now. If you put that needle down and tell me who hired you, I can protect you!"

"Nobody can protect me from them!" Elena cried, her hand trembling violently as she raised the syringe. "They have my daughter! They took her three weeks ago! They said if I didn't make sure the baby died before his first birthday, they would send her back to me in a box!"

Maya felt a sickening punch in her gut. The cruelty of the plot was staggering—it wasn't just a betrayal of blood; it was a cold, calculated operation using innocent collateral.

"Who took your daughter, Elena?" Maya asked softly, taking a slow, non-threatening step forward. "Tell me a name."

"I... I don't know his name!" Elena sobbed. "He called himself 'The Architect'! He knew everything about this house! He gave me the keycode for the terrace door! He gave me the caps!"

"He lied to you, Elena," Maya said gently, keeping her eyes fixed on the syringe. "If you administer that dose, Nico dies tonight. And once Nico dies, you become a loose end. They will never let you or your daughter walk away alive. You know how these people operate."

Elena’s resolution wavered. She looked from Maya to the small, sleeping form of Nico in the crib. The syringe trembled in her fingers.

"I... I didn't have a choice..." Elena whispered.

"You have a choice right now," Maya said. "Give me the syringe. Let Lorenzo Bolaro do what he does best. He has the power to find your daughter. You know he does."

Elena looked down at the syringe. For a second, it seemed like she was going to surrender. She lowered her arm.

Suddenly, the nursery door behind Maya was burst open.

"Maya!" Lorenzo’s voice boomed as he stormed into the room, gun drawn, followed by Matteo.

The sudden intrusion shattered the fragile moment. Terrified, Elena panicked. With a desperate scream, she lunged forward, swinging the needle toward Maya’s neck!

Maya acted on pure instinct. She didn't retreat. She ducked under Elena’s arm, drove her shoulder into the older woman's torso, and slammed her against the wall. The syringe flew from Elena’s hand, shattering against the hardwood floor.

Lorenzo was there in an instant, grabbing Elena by the collar and slamming her face-first against the table, pinning her arms behind her back with brutal efficiency.

"Don't kill her!" Maya shouted, grabbing Lorenzo’s arm. "Don't kill her! Her daughter has been kidnapped! She’s being forced!"

Lorenzo held Elena pinned, his heavy chest heaving, his eyes burning with rage. He looked down at the shattered glass of the syringe on the floor, then at Maya, who was standing over the mess, breathless but uninjured.

"Is the baby touched?" Lorenzo barked at Matteo.

"He’s fine, Boss. Sleeping right through it," Matteo reported, standing guard over the crib.

Lorenzo turned Elena around, holding her by the throat against the wall, though he loosened his grip just enough to let her speak.

"Who has your daughter?" Lorenzo growled.

"I... I don't know!" Elena wept hysterically. "He... he called from an untraceable number! He told me to go to a drop box in Lincoln Park!"

Maya knelt down beside the shattered glass, carefully using a piece of paper to scoop up a drop of the clear liquid that had spilled from the broken syringe. She brought it to her nose, sniffing cautiously.

"It’s Potassium Chloride," Maya said, her medical training instantly recognizing the distinct chemical profile. "High concentration. A direct intravenous injection would cause immediate cardiac arrest within seconds."

Lorenzo looked at Elena, his face dark as a thundercloud. "Who gave you the keycode to the terrace door, Elena? That code was changed three days ago. Only four people had it."

Elena shook her head, tears streaming down her rain-soaked cheeks. "It was sent to my phone an hour ago... in a text from an anonymous number."

Lorenzo pulled his phone from his pocket and dialed a number. "Matteo, get the tech team up here. I want the cell tower logs for the last two hours surrounding this house. Every incoming and outgoing signal."

He looked at Maya. She was standing there, her uniform slightly disheveled, a small cut on her finger from the broken glass, but her chin was held high.

"You took down an attacker for my son," Lorenzo said softly.

"I did what had to be done," Maya replied quietly. "Now find that woman's daughter."
