Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Heart

One year later.

Early summer had arrived at the lakeside estate. The wildflower gardens were in full, brilliant bloom—a sea of indigo lavender, crimson roses, and bright yellow clover stretching all the way down to the blue waters of Lake Michigan.

The heavy iron gates at the perimeter of the estate stood wide open, welcoming dozens of guests—local community members, hospital doctors, foundation workers, and close friends.

On the manicured green lawn overlooking the lake, a grand white marquee was set up for a celebration.

Today was not a corporate gala, nor a political gathering.

It was the wedding of Roman Valente and Mara Ellis.

Mara stood inside the morning room, looking at herself in the full-length mirror. She wore a breathtaking, vintage ivory lace gown that hugged her slender frame with graceful elegance. Her brown hair was styled in soft waves, adorned with tiny, delicate white orchids.

Around her neck hung a simple, delicate gold necklace—the thin gold chain holding her mother’s original wedding ring.

The door opened softly, and Sophia walked in. Now nine years old, she wore a matching ivory flower-girl dress, holding a basket full of blue butterfly confetti.

"You look like a princess, Mara," Sophia said, her wide brown eyes full of pure adoration.

Mara knelt down in her dress, framing Sophia’s face with her hands. "And you look like the prettiest maid of honor in the world, sweet pea."

Sophia reached out, touching the gold ring on Mara’s necklace. "Mommy Lucia would have loved you so much, Mara."

Mara felt a warm tear slide down her cheek, but her smile was radiant. "I love her too, Sophia. Every single day."

A knock sounded at the door. Luca Ferraro stepped into the room, wearing a handsome dark tuxedo, holding two small glasses of sparkling apple cider.

"It’s time, ladies," Luca said with a broad, genuine smile. "The Don is pacing near the altar like a lion who hasn't eaten in three days."

Mara laughed, standing up and taking Sophia’s small hand in hers. "Then we better not keep him waiting."

As the soft, melodic sounds of an acoustic violin filled the summer air, Mara walked down the long, flower-lined aisle toward the lake.

Standing at the wooden altar beneath a canopy of blooming white roses stood Roman.

He looked magnificent. His dark tuxedo was tailored to perfection, his thick hair combed back, his dark eyes shining with an intense, overwhelming love that made Mara’s heart soar.

When Mara reached his side, Roman reached out, taking both of her hands in his heavy, warm grip. He leaned down, whispering so only she could hear: "You are the most beautiful sight I have ever seen in my life."

"And you are my home, Roman," Mara whispered back.

The justice of the peace performed a simple, heartfelt ceremony. There were no complex vows, no formal speeches—only two people who had survived the deepest dark pledging their lives, their hearts, and their future to one another.

"By the authority vested in me," the officiant announced with a warm smile, "I now pronounce you husband and wife. Roman, you may kiss your bride."

Roman didn't hesitate. He wrapped his arms around Mara’s waist, lifting her slightly off her feet as he brought his lips down onto hers in a deep, passionate, and infinitely tender kiss that drew loud cheers and applause from everyone present.

Sophia threw a handful of blue butterfly confetti high into the air, the bright blue paper fluttering in the warm breeze like a hundred protective wings against the golden afternoon sky.

Later that evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon and the stars began to twinkle over the quiet lake, Roman and Mara stood on the wooden pier at the edge of the water.

Roman stood behind her, his powerful arms wrapped securely around her waist, his chin resting softly on top of her head. Mara leaned back into his solid, warm chest, her hands resting over his.

"Happy, Mrs. Valente?" Roman murmured into her hair.

Mara turned her head slightly, kissing his jawline. "I have everything I ever prayed for, Roman. A home, a purpose, a beautiful daughter... and the bravest man in the world."

Roman tightened his hold around her, pulling her closer as they watched the gentle waves lap against the shore.

The shadows of the past were completely gone. The fear was dead. The poison had been washed away by truth.

And in the quiet, golden light of their new life, the maid who had noticed a strange bracelet had finally found where she truly belonged—safe in the arms of the sovereign heart.
